Abstract

This study aimed to examine whether converting students’ own local stories into English could improve their speaking ability and to identify students’ responses toward the use of short stories in speaking class. The study employed a quasi-experimental design involving 30 fourth-semester students of the English Education Department at STKIP Muhammadiyah Enrekang, who were randomly assigned into an experimental group and a control group, with 15 students in each group. Data were collected through speaking tests and a questionnaire. The speaking test was administered before and after the treatment, while the questionnaire was used to explore students’ responses to the instructional strategy. The findings revealed that the experimental group showed a significant improvement in speaking performance after receiving the treatment through short story conversion and retelling activities, whereas the control group did not show meaningful progress under conventional instruction. The students also expressed positive responses toward the use of short stories, indicating that this strategy helped them speak more confidently, enriched vocabulary use, reduced anxiety, and created a more meaningful speaking experience. The study concludes that converting stories from students’ own language into English is an effective instructional strategy for improving speaking ability in EFL classrooms, particularly because it connects language learning with familiar cultural content and encourages active oral participation.

Abstract

This paper discusses the role of electronic commerce in the retailing of travel and tourism services through online platforms. The study aims to explain the concept of online travel retailing, the types of services provided, special service features, the benefits and limitations of online travel services, and the broader impact of electronic commerce on the travel industry. The paper uses a descriptive qualitative approach based on literature review and conceptual discussion drawn from relevant references on e-commerce and online travel services. The discussion shows that the Internet has become an important communication, marketing, and distribution channel that enables travelers to search information, compare prices, make reservations, and purchase travel services more efficiently. Online travel services also provide added value through fare comparison, direct marketing, travel alerts, loyalty programs, and intelligent-agent support. From the provider perspective, online systems improve operational efficiency, expand market reach, and reduce intermediary and processing costs. However, online travel services also face several limitations, including unequal Internet access, difficulties for inexperienced users, reliability and security concerns, and the limited ability of online systems to handle complex travel arrangements requiring personalized assistance. The paper concludes that electronic commerce has significantly transformed the travel and tourism retail sector by increasing accessibility, efficiency, and competitiveness, although conventional travel agents still remain relevant for specialized and complex services.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the teaching styles used by English teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Enrekang, to determine the teaching styles preferred by second-grade students, and to examine whether the teachers’ teaching styles could maintain students’ motivation in learning English. The study employed a descriptive design. The participants were two English teachers and 30 second-grade students selected from two classes. Data were collected through an observation checklist, a questionnaire, and interviews. The findings revealed that the teacher of class XI IPA 3 mainly applied an auditory-oriented teaching style, while the teacher of class XI IPS 1 combined visual and auditory styles. In contrast, students in both classes showed a stronger preference for kinesthetic and visual teaching styles. Despite these differences, the students’ motivation toward learning English was categorized as positive in both classes, as indicated by questionnaire results with mean scores of approximately 4.0 on the Likert scale. These findings suggest that teaching style plays an important role in maintaining students’ motivation in English learning. The study concludes that although teachers and students may differ in their preferred teaching styles, appropriate classroom interaction and instructional delivery can still support positive student motivation.
