Abstract

Abstract

Traditional medicine "Subur Kandungan" is a medicine that is widely used and produced in Madura. The problem to develop Madura’s herb is raw material that hasn’t the standardized medicine used for Madura’s traditional medicine, because that raw materials are mostly purchased from traditional markets. This led to the standardization of Madura’s traditional medicine is difficult to do. This condition causes didn’t known active compounds contained in the Madura’s medicine. This study was conducted to determine the content of phytochemical compounds from ethanol extract medicine "Subur Kandungan" as well as antioxidant activity. Based on the results, it was concluded that the class of chemical compounds contained in the Madura’s traditional medicine "Subur Kandungan" are classified as a flavonoids and alkaloids, while the antioxidant activity of extracts of the medicine " Subur Kandungan " are expressed in IC50 was at 90.19 ppm classified as a strong antioxidant.

Abstract

Selaginella is a single genus of ferns allies belong to Selaginelaceae family that lives in moist areas and it is often found in highlands which spread approximately 700 species all over the world. Some Selaginella species have wide distribution and tend to be invasive, but the others are endemics or endangered. The diversity study and distribution of Selaginella in Indonesia fom 1998 until 2014 was done by exploring Selaginella articles from many source. In Indonesia from 1998 until 2014, there were found about 39 species of Selaginella, namely S. alligans, S. alutacia, S. angustiramea, S. apoensis, S. aristata, S. biformis, S. caudata, S. ciliaris, S. cupressina, S. delicatula, S. doederleinii, S. frondosa, S. illanosii, S. intermedia, S. involvens, S. ketra-ayam, S. kraussiana, S. longiaristata, S. magnifica, S. mayeri, S. modica, S. nummularia, S. opaca, S. ornata, S. padangensis, S. plana, S. remotifolia, S. repanda, S. rothertii, S. rupestris, S. singalanensis, S. spinulosa, S. subalpina, S. uncinata, S. velutina, S. vonroemeri, S. wallichii, S. willdenovii, and S. zollingeriana that spread in the islands of Sumatera, Bangka-Belitung, Java, Bali, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Lombok, Maluku, and Irian Jaya with different altitude and patterns of spread

Abstract

Obesity is a predisposing factor for metabolic syndrome that increases the risk of development of chronic diseases such as type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and atherosclerosis. Obesity is associated with a chronic inflammatory condition with progressive infiltration of immune cells in the adipose tissue of obesity. Adipose tissue is not only a triglyceride storage organ, but studies have shown the role of white adipose tissue as a producer of adipokines. Besides adipokines, also found several inflammatory mediators, such as interleukin-6 (IL-6). Adipokines have the function of regulating food intake, thus providing a direct effect on weight control. It is played by leptin, which is working on the limbic system by stimulating the uptake of dopamine, creating a feeling of fullness. But these adipokines induces production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in a process known as oxidative stress (OS). There are several mechanisms in producing the oxidative stress . The first is the oxidation of mitochondrial and peroxisomal fatty acid oxidation, which can generate ROS in the oxidation reaction, whereas other mechanisms is over-consumption of oxygen, which generates free radicals in the mitochondrial respiratory chain were found together with oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria. High fat diet also capable of generating ROS because it can alter the oxygen metabolism

Abstract

Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia. Type 2 Diabetes is most commonly type which accounts for 90-95% of those, resulting from defects in insulin secretion and insulin action. Management of type 2 diabetes should combine pharmacological therapy with both diet modification and increasing physical activity. Nutraceutical was known to have important role. A kind of Araceae family, Porang (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume), has a main content of glucomannan. Glucomannan is a water-soluble polysaccharide, high fibers and low calories. Various studies suggest the benefit effects of glucomannan in type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve blood glucose level and lipid profiles. Its mechanism is postulated to be associated with the intrinsic physical effects of soluble fiber in the gastrointestinal tract and fermentation by microflora in the large intestine that trigger production of several gut hormones. Short Chain Fatty Acids, product of fiber fermentation, can improve insulin sensitivity through competition with free fatty acids and increasing expression of GLUT 4 in insulin sensitive tissues. Therefore, glucomannan from Porang has a great potential to be a nutraceutical for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
