Abstract

Study on some biological aspect of freshwater eel in the Ketahun river, Bengkulu Province was conducted in 1997. Four stations were set up by using purposive sampling method. The objective of this study was to obtain some information on biological aspect of freshwater eel such as length-weight relationships, characteristic of natural growth, condition factor, food habit and water quality. Results showed that there was definitely one species of sidat encounted in the Ketahun river i.e : Anguilla marmorata called “pelus kembang”. The characteristic of natural growth was isometric with b value of 2,32-3,43, and condition factor of 1,065-1,200. Based on their feeding habit, this freshwater eel (Anguilla marmorata) can be grouped in carnivorous fish. Water quality condition of the Ketahun river can still support freshwater ell’s life. Keywords: biological aspects, freshwater ell (Anguilla spp.), Ketahun river Bengkulu

Abstract

The exceptional fish biodviserty resource of South Sumatera Province must be utilized optimally in order to increase the well-being of the South Sumatera people in short and long terms. This means that utiliziation should be based not only on economical consideration but also on ecological and environmental principles, and should be under-pinned by the principle of sustainable use. Identification of important fish area in South Sumatera as a tool for help conserving fish biodiversity. In this paper, a place may be identified as important fish area or “fish hot-spot” it fulfill one of four criterias: important wetland area, protected area, level of endemism or important fish species in the area and occurrence of other species as indicator. Based on these criterias, 20 sites have been identified as important fish area in South Sumatera. Keywords: important area, fish, South Sumatra

Abstract

Inventory study on aquatic plants was conducted in Rawa Taliwang lake, located at West Nusa Tenggara. The area of this water body total ranges from 584 to 913 ha and most of the water surface area is convered with aquatic macrophytes. In 1990 the fish yield was 241 ton and than declined to 36,9 ton in 1994. The objective of this study was to evaluate the species distribution and abundance of the aquatic plants in the lake. Field investigations for ecological study of aquatic plants were conducted in June and in October 1999, representing dry and rainy seasons, repectively. Result of this study showed that the importance values of the aquatic plant during the wet seasons (6,70-71,06%) were not significant different compared than that in dry seasons (6,59-70,13%). The aquatic plants found in Rawa Taliwang were consisted of 16 species and they covered 70-80% of the water surface area. The important floating aquatic plants were Salvinia molesta, Nelumbo lutea, Nymphaea pubescens, Pistia stratiotes and Monochoria vaginalis, whereas the submerged aquatic plants were dominated by Hydrilla verticillata, Ceratophyllum demersum, and Najas indica. Keywords : aquatic plants, density, dominancy, frequency, importance value

Abstract

Effect of cage construction and stocking densites on the growth, production and feed conversion was evaluated for catfish (Pangasius djambal) for 6 months experimental period. Fingerlings with initial mean weight of 31,53 gram were reared in rectangular and circle pen at density of 50, 75 And 100 fish/pen/m3. The fingerlings were fed on commercial feed containing 27% protein at 3% of body weight a day. The result showed that interaction effect of pen shape and stocking density on fish growth, production, survival rate and feed conversion was not significant difference (P>0,05). Stocking densities difference were significant effect on growth and production. Low stocking density resulted fast growth, edlow production and high stocking density result slow growth and hight production. Growth ranging from 369,99-430,64 g, production 58.970-91.050 g, survival rate 75-88% and feed conversion 2,71-2,85.Keywords: Pangasius djambal, pen culture, density

Abstract

Fish and shrimp lived in bloomed of blue green algae environment commonly face muddy flavour problem. That was cased by geosmin, a metabolite product of blue green algae. It can be found in pounds, both in freshwater or brachiswater, and in open water area. Geosmin absorbed by fish through the gill, skin, intestine and stomach. The concentration of geosmin in fish or shrimp according to be concertation in the environtmen and the length of time of fish or shrimp in such environment. Among several methods to reduce or eliminate this muddy flavour, physical method is the mostly applied by fish farmer or fish saler. In addition to fish processing method is another way to solve the muddy flavour in fish. Keywords: fish, blooming algae, geosmin, physical method
