Abstract

The field suwey was carried out to identify the most critical factors that influence the performances of muscovy duck raised extensively under village condition in sub district Linggo Sari Baganti, Pesisir Selatan, West Sumatra. Thirty-three muscovy duck farmers, which were distributed in 4 villages in the sub district, were selected and intewiewed. Information collected included: flock size, egg production, egg hatchability, mortality, daily management practices, feed and feeding and health control. The average number of muscovy ducks raised was 11 ducks/farmer. The ducks laid egg 2-3 times per year with the average number of 12 eggs/duck/laying period. The hatchability of egg was about 84%, but the mortality of young duck during starter period was found very high, i.e. 42 %. Although about 67 % gave supplemented feed for their ducks, most of the feed consumed by the ducks were originated from scavenging. Most of farmers (70 %) did not take care young ducks. The ducklings were let to scavenge with their mother for about 12 weeks of old. Such feeding and management practices might be the major causing factors for the low egg production and high mortality of young duck.

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of excess energy intake above the level of energy requirement for maintenance (ERM) on the abdominal fat deposition. Five diets were formulated with different energy levels of above ERM i.e.: (A) ERM, (B) ERM + 30 kcal, (C) ERM + 60 kcal, (D) ERM + 90 kcal, and (E) ERM + 120 kcal. The diets were then offered for 4 weeks to 32 broiler chickens of two weeks old. Parameters measured included: body weight gain, abdominal fat, body fat and protein content. Results indicated that restriction of energy intake could not significantly reduce the abdominal fat deposition of broiler. During the growing period, the excess energy intake was not used for muscle growth maximally, but also used to deposit abdominal fat.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the effect of fermentation by soil microbes on the in vitro DM, NDF, ADF digestibility and fermentability characteristics of palm empty bunch. Palm empty bunch is fermented by 10% soil microbes inoculum / kg DM with length of 0, 1, 2 and 3 weeks fermentation at aerobic condition. Digestibility was determined after 48 h incubation with rumen fluid of Tilley and Terry technique. Data were analyzed as a Block randomized Design. Digestibility of DM, NDF and ADF, were difference among treatments. In vitro DM digestibility after 48 h was higher for 2 weeks of fermentation (50,36%) than for 0, 1, and 3 week fermentation (33,72, 48,09, and 46,36 %) (P<0,05). Neutral Detergen Fiber digestibility after 48 h was higher for 2 weeks of fermentation (39,5 %) than for 0, 1, and 3 wk fermentation ( 28,8, 34,82, and 30,56 %) (P<0,05). In vitro ADF digestibility after 48 h was also higher for 2 weeks of fermentation (34.88 %) than for 0, 1, and 3 wk fermentation (20,9, 29,73, and 26.) (p<0.05). The average of pH was non difference among treatment. Concentration of NH3 was increase for all treatment, and concentration of VFA was also higher for 2 weeks fermentation (113,46 mM). It was concluded that palm empty bunch fermented by soil microbes for length of 2 weeks fermentation has better digestibility and fermentabitity.

Abstract

Methane (CH4) is produced as a result of anaerobic fermentation of the soluble and structural carbohydrates by methanogens in the rumen of ruminant animals, which is released into the environment by eructation. Methane production from ruminant range from 2 to 12% of the gross energy intake and represents a substantial loss in efficiency of animal production. Recently, CH4 production by ruminants has also received attention due to its contribution to global warming. Much research has been carried out on the manipulation of rumen fermentation to inhibit methanogenesis. Several strategies can be treated to reduce CH4 production in the rumen such as by feed manipulation (composition, feeding level) or by the use of both chemical and natural feed additives. More biotechnological interventions e.g., defaunation, probiotics and prebiotics, and introduction of reductive acetogenesis in the rumen, are also mentioned. Chemical inhibitors have proved to be effective in decreasing CH4 production to variying degrees. Problems with chemical inhibitors have been noted, such as rumen microbial adaptation, toxicity to the host, residues in endible products and an inability to increase energetic efficiency.

Abstract

The aims of the present experiment were to study the effect of substrate composition and time period of incubation on the nutrient composition of chicken feather meal fermented with EM4. The experiment using completely: randomized design was aranged in 3 x 3 factorial designs with there replicates. The treatment were substrate composition (A) (A1 100% feather meal + 0% rice bran, A2 90% feather meal + 10% rice bran, A3 80% feather meal + 20% rice bran), and time of incubation (B) (9,12 and 15 days). Parameters observed were crude protein, crude fiber, crude lipid and BETN. Results showed that there was no interaction (P>0,05) between substrate composition and time of fermentation on crude protein, crude fiber, crude lipid and BETN, substrate composition and time of incubation gave significantly (P<0,05) effect on crude protein, crude fiber, crude lipid and BETN of the fermented products. It was concluded that the optimum substrate composition and incubation time was found by using 80% feather meal + 20% rice brand and 15 days of incubation time, which gave the highest crude protein of 56,37% and low crude lipid of 23,95 % and crude fiber of 3,4 %.
