Abstract

The objectives of this experiment were to study the effect of chicken hypophyse gland exttact for spawning of carp. Each twenty female of about 2950-3050 g/head and 100 of male carp of about 300-350 g body weight/head were used in the experiments. Hypophyse gland extract were prepared from the hypophyse glands of broiler chickens of about 10 days old. As treatments, the extract was injected in five different doses of 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 mg/kg body weight. Each dose was injected twice. The second injection was done after 1 hours. Each treatment consisted of 4 replications as block. Parameter measured included: egg fertility, egg hatching rate and survival rate of larvae, water qualities (temperature, dissolved 02. free CO2, NH3 content and pH). Data were statistically analyzed by variance analysis in randomized block design (RBD). Results indicated that injection of broiler's hypophyse gland extract gave highly significant (P < 0.01) effect on spawning egg fertility, egg hatching rate and survival rate of carp larvae of three days old. The optimal injection dose was found 582 mg broiler's hypophyse gland/kg carp body weight.

Abstract

The life cycle of earthworm Perionyx excavatus in the faces of livestock animals has been studied and had potency to depredate the animal wastes through vermiculture process. Optimal live environmental conditions were needed to achieve the optimal vermiculture process. The rate of growth and reproduction of the worm depended mainly on the availability of nutition in the medium. In this experiment, four different animal feces were used as vermiculture media, e.g. cattle, horse, rabbit and chicken. The increase of body length was measured as the growth rate function of the worm P. excavagatus. The change of temperature, pH and humidity of medium were measured as the factors affecting the growth rate. These factors were important in research objectives, i.e. production of earthworm biomass for poultry feedstuff and of high quality biofertilizer by using animal wastes as vermiculture medium. Feces of cattle and rabbit were found the best medium of vermiculture. P.excavagus cultivated in the feces of both animals showed the fast similar growth rate. The growth rate of P.excavagus in four different medium could be ordered as follows: cattle feces> rabbit feces>horse feces. Feces of chicken was found not suitable for earthworm media because of low pH. Biofertilizer from the vermiculture could be produced in relatively short time period with better physical characteristic in compare to the normal biofertilizer.

Abstract

The present work was aimed to study the effect of temperature and time of incubation of palm kernel cake fermented with A. niger on the activity of enzymes and nutrient content. The experiment was arranged in completely factorial design of 3x3 patterns. The first factor was three levels of temperature of 30, 37, 41oC, the second were three different times of incubation of 4, 6, and 8 days. Parameter observed included cellulose and protease activities, crude protein and crude fiber contents. Results showed that there was a signifficantly interaction between temperature and incubation times (P< 0,01) on enzyme activity of cellulose and protease and crude protein, but time of fermented were significantly (P<0,05) on crude fiber of palm kernel cake fermentation. It was concluded that the optimum temperature and time of incubation were 30 oC and 6 day, which gave the highest content of crude protein (27,70 %) and crude fiber (17.73 %).

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to isolated and produce cellulase from soil molds and to characterize the enzyme. The strains of mold isolated from soil, namely Rhizopus spp and one cultured mold. Trichoderma viride, was used to produce the enzymes. Medium for enzyme production consisted of NH4NO3, KCl, FeSO4.7H2O, MgSO4.7H2O, CuSO4.2H2O and rice straw as a sole source of carbon (pH : 5.45). Culture was done at 28oC for 5,8,11 and 14 days with shaking at 150 rpm. Using this method cellulase production was optimum at 14 days with substrat concentration of 1.5% for T. viride culture. However the optimum production of cellulase for Rhizopus spp culture were three days shorter than culture of T.viride with substrat concentration of 1.5 and 1% respectively. Temperature and pH optimal activity of cellulases were as follow : cellulase from T.viride at temperature 60oC and pH 5 and cellulase from Rhizopus spp at temperature 50oC and pH 5. While temperature and pH stability of cellulases were as follow : cellulase from T. viride at temperature 30 - 80oC and pH 3 - 7 and cellulase from Rhizopus spp at temperature 30 - 80oC and pH 3-6. It was concluded that molds can grow on rice straw as a sole source of carbon produce cellulases.

Abstract

This paper discussed the potency of kampong chickens as the main source of employment and income in West Sumatra. From about 2 millions of Indonesian kampong chickens in 2005, about 5.725.515 were found in West Sumatra. In terms of egg production, body weight gain and feed utilization efficiency, the productivity and biological performances of kampong chickens were much lower than that of hybrid chickens. On the other hand, the product of kampong chickens, e.g. egg and meat, in the market were normally valued higher by the consumers because of their better taste and healthier product. In addition, kampong chickens could be intensively reared in lower production cost because of their lower nutritional and management requirements. Results of some studies has shown that production of kampong chicken might be directed for business unit as back yard or intensively farming especially in supporting of economic development in the rural community.
