Abstract

The domestic beef cattle producers have supplied only 70 percent of the national need. Demand of the beef cattle has not been accompanied by an increasing of supply response. One of the major problems in beef cattle farming is its low productivity that might be caused by its low efficiency of input use. Therefore, this study aims are (1) to estimate the factors that influence the production of beef cattle fattening, (2) to analyze the level of technical efficiency of beef cattle fattening. The stochastic production frontier is used to estimate production function. The results showed that quantity of concentrate, dummy of cattle’s age, and dummy of livestock ownership significantly influence production. The average value of the farm technical efficiency is 0.764 ranging from a minimum of 0.478 to a maximum of 0.996.

Abstract

Attacus atlas is one of the wild silkworms which is originated from Indonesia, which has economic value and high potency to be developed especially at the cocoon stage. These potential aspects for future developed include row material of silk fabrics, cosmetics, medical, and engineering materials. However, this potential has not been matched by productions level. Attacus atlas still live in nature with only 10% of cocoon production rate. In this study, A. atlas was reared in the laboratory to determine the different characteristics of Attacus atlas cocoon between rearing enviromntment as compared to which in nature. The results showed that the characteristics of the cocoon varies and influenced by humidity and temperature environments, place and behavior during making cocoon. Whole cocoon weight average of 6.37±1.07 g/cocoon, weight of floss (0.23±0.09 g/cocoon or 5.82±3.86%), weight of shell cocoon (0.62±0.35 g/cocoon or 11.95±3.38%), weight of pupa (3.77±1.99 g/cocoon or 71.74±9.42%), length of cocoon (54.30±5.74 mm), the diameter of the cocoon (22.26±2.60 mm posterior, 25.65±2.38 mm medial and 22.92±2.45 mm anterior), the cocoon circumference (70.42±7.48 mm posterior, 80.70±10.69 mm medial and 72.19±12.81 mm anterior).

Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate fermentation quality of complete feed silage based on corn, palm and cassava by products. Each complete feed was ensiled separately in 50 litres silo and were opened 6 weeks after ensiling. The silage products were evaluated in terms of physical (colour, smell, and presence of moulds), chemical (pH, N-amonia content, WSC loss and dry matter loss) and microbial properties (number of lactic acid bacteria). The data was analyzed by using Completely Randomized Design with three treatments and six replications, followed by LSD test. The result showed that all complete feed silage treatments were having good quality. Fermentation quality of silage was affected with  kind of complete feed silage (P<0.05). In general, all of treatments had good fermentation quality of silage, because it have lower pH, ammonia content, WSC loss and dry matter also. It is concluded that quality fermentation of complete feed silage based on corn, palm and cassava by products had good quality and can be recomended as ruminant feeding.
