Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the impact of implementing halal principles and Islamic morality on perceptions of socio-cultural responsibility in halal tourism destinations. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a phenomenological approach, incorporating surveys and in-depth interviews with Muslim tourists. The findings reveal that halal principles—such as the provision of halal-certified food, adequate prayer facilities, and environments free from prohibited activities—significantly enhance socio-cultural responsibility. Furthermore, Islamic morality, which emphasizes modesty, honesty, justice, and social care, promotes positive interactions and respect among visitors. This research underscores the importance of integrating Islamic values into tourism management to cultivate socially and culturally responsible destinations. Contributing to the literature on halal tourism and socio-cultural responsibility, the study offers practical insights for destination managers seeking to improve service quality and develop effective marketing strategies. Recommendations include enhancing halal facilities, promoting local economic empowerment, and educating tourists about Islamic values to boost satisfaction and loyalty among Muslim travelers.

Abstract

This article explores the intersection of Islam and eco-theology within the context of Muhammadiyah. It is prompted by the current global environmental crisis, as the earth is facing various environmental challenges, disasters, and diseases. There is a growing awareness of the need to address these crises by drawing upon religious principles, a practice known as eco-theology. The article employs a qualitative research method using literature. Its goal is to delineate Islamic principles and eco-theology that can serve as guiding principles in natural resource management and to compare environmental theology from the perspective of the Muhammadiyah Central Environmental Council ‘Majelis Lingkungan Hidup Pimpinan Pusat Muhammadiyah’. The authors summarize the concept of Islam and eco-theology, which is based on five sharia pillars: monotheism, caliphate, trustworthiness, fairness, and istişlaḥ. Drawing from these pillars, Muhammadiyah has formulated key policies for environmental da'wah, including environmental charity (waste sadaqah), Muhammadiyah's independent environmental audit, adiwiyata (environmental care) schools, water use guidelines, environmentally friendly practices in offices, and virtual environmental da'wah and campaigns.

Abstract

The merariq tradition constitutes a significant cultural practice prevalent among many members of the Sasak community in Lombok, with historical roots extending back to ancient times. This tradition has been meticulously preserved and conveyed through generations, reflecting the unique cultural heritage of the Sasak people. Within the framework of this research, religious norms pertain to the behavioral regulations that are derived from the sacred texts of various religions. These norms guide followers in their moral and ethical conduct. Conversely, ethical norms are dictated by individual conscience, providing a subjective basis for discerning right from wrong. The primary objective of this study is to examine the perspectives of newcomers visiting Lombok regarding the merariq tradition, particularly in relation to established religious and ethical norms within the Sasak community. This research adopts a qualitative methodology, specifically utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach. The findings indicate that, from the viewpoint of these outsiders, the merariq tradition does not infringe upon either religious or ethical norms. This conclusion is noteworthy, as it is evident that there are no explicit written regulations within the frameworks of religious or ethical guidelines that directly prohibit the observance of the merariq tradition. This understanding underscores the perspective that an action is generally regarded as a violation of established norms only in the presence of clear prohibitory rules. Consequently, for these visitors, the merariq tradition is perceived as a respected cultural expression that integrates harmoniously within the broader social and religious context of Lombok.

Abstract

The crime of human trafficking has a significant impact and affects a large number of victims. This study examines the legal framework for protecting victims in Indonesia, analyzing these laws through the lenses of constitutionalism, natural law theory, and Islamic perspectives on restitution and social reintegration. The study used Natural Law theory to analyze the fundamental principles of justice that should guide the enforcement of restitution for victims of human trafficking. It also evaluated the alignment of Indonesian positive laws with principles of natural justice and the social reintegration of victims, using perspectives of constitutionalism and Islamic law. The research methods employed in this study included normative legal research, literature review, and qualitative analysis. The study found that Indonesian positive laws, such as Law No. 21 of 2007 and Law No. 1 of 2023, establish a comprehensive legal framework for the recovery and protection of human trafficking victims. However, they do not fully address the specific needs of victims, particularly in terms of psychological support. Evaluating based on constitutionalism and the concept of diyyah in Islam emphasizes the importance of financial compensation in recognizing the victims' suffering. Additionally, the concept of kafālah underscores the need for guaranteed protection, including social support, education, and social reintegration, to fully restore the dignity and well-being of victims. The study highlights the importance of community involvement in the reintegration process and advocates for legal reforms to enhance the effectiveness of the existing framework. These findings emphasize the need for an interdisciplinary approach in legal and policy frameworks to ensure the full recovery and reintegration of human trafficking victims.

Abstract

The Islamic Revolution in Iran serves as a notable example of the erosion of moral values and political ethics. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of Imam Khomeini's concept of Wilāyah al-Faqīh in relation to the moral philosophy that underpins a nation. The research primarily employs library sources and utilizes a descriptive analysis method. The primary data consists of Imam Khomeini's thoughts on Wilāyah al-Faqīh, as articulated in his work Hukumat-e Islami: Velayat-e Faqih. Secondary data is drawn from his other writings, such as Islam and Revolution: Islamic Government along with additional relevant literature. The data collection process involves several steps: identifying literature that discusses Imam Khomeini's thought, reading and concentrating on his ideas, noting key points, and seeking other pertinent references. The data analysis employs content analysis and hermeneutic models, which are conducted in three main stages: data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings of this research uncover a profound relationship between Islamic political ethics and Imam Khomeini's concept of Wilāyah al-Faqīh. In a government based on Wilāyah al-Faqīh, there is no separation between religion and politics, as both realms share the common objective of establishing a just society rooted in God's law. For Imam Khomeini, politics is an extension of ethics, whereby ethics encompasses both individual conduct and social responsibilities.

Abstract

The rise of popular Islamic media in the digital age has shifted the influence from traditional to popular religion, impacting society's mindset. Interestingly, the digital space is predominantly occupied by conservative and radical forms of Islam. In response, this study examines the strategies employed by moderate groups to promote religious moderation, particularly through the Islamic portal nu.or.id. This portal aims to provide reliable information about Nu-an and Islam. The study analyzes articles, concepts, and viewpoints published on the portal to evaluate their promotion of moderation. Jürgen Habermas' theory of communicative rationality is used to assess moderate tendencies, while essays on nu.or.id are evaluated based on truth, accuracy, and honesty. The study concludes that nu.or.id's efforts to promote religious moderation have a significant impact on filtering news content or thoughts that do not align with Islamic values. Writers consistently use logical and religious arguments to challenge the conservative-radical narrative of Islam. The strategy implemented by portals such as nu.or.id appears to resonate with middle-class Muslims, who are often targeted by fundamentalist groups. Therefore, targeting a general audience through nu.or.id is seen as a positive step.

Abstract

The ngumbah keris tradition is recognized as a practice aimed at warding off bad luck through a series of specific rituals that incorporate mantras and offerings. This study explores the responses of kiai langgar to the ngumbah keris ritual using ethnographic methodology. Data were collected through purposive sampling, in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation. The analysis adhered to Miles and Huberman's interactive model, which encompasses data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, supplemented by triangulation to ensure both validity and reliability. Max Weber's theory of charismatic authority provided the theoretical framework for this study, which is crucial for understanding how kiai langgar exercise their authority to mediate between traditional practices and religious principles. This framework highlights a dualistic response: kiai langgar aligned with Nahdlatul Ulama view the ritual as a means of seeking divine blessings, provided it is in accordance with Islamic teachings. In contrast, kiai langgar associated with Muhammadiyah classify the ritual as bid'ah (innovation) and superstition. The findings indicate that the negotiation of religious and cultural values is significantly shaped by the charismatic authority of the kiai langgar, influencing community perceptions and practices. This study deepens the understanding of the complex interplay between traditional rituals and Islamic teachings within rural Javanese communities, underscoring the role of kiai langgar as cultural brokers and agents of social change.

Abstract

This article explores the contestation of religious identity at the Masjid Gedhe ‘Grand Mosque’ of Kauman Yogyakarta, a provincial cultural heritage site in Yogyakarta. The study focuses on two events between October 2019 and March 2020: the rejection of the Muslim United #2 event by the Keraton ‘Palace’ and the refusal by the local Kauman community to hold a Nahdhatul Ulama anniversary at the mosque. The series of events can be read as an effort by each party to contest the power they have. This research is a descriptive study guided by a constructivist research philosophy and historical approach, which focuses on understanding cultural identity through the lens of social context. The study employs a combination of primary sources, such as photo archives and documents, alongside secondary sources, including articles from online news portals, to analyze two specific events. Data is collected through these sources and analyzed using Stuart Hall's cultural identity theory, providing a framework for interpreting the findings and examining how religious identity is contested at the Masjid Gedhe Kauman Yogyakarta. The result highlights how the Masjid Gedhe Kauman Yogyakarta became a contested space for religious identity between different groups, with each event reflecting ongoing power dynamics and cultural negotiations. The rejection of both the Muslim United #2 and the NU Anniversary events illustrates how identity is shaped and contested through representation and authority, where power structures, both institutional and community-based, played key roles in defining the mosque's religious and cultural identity.

Abstract

This study seeks to analyze the business performance of batik traders in the Johar Baru market of Semarang City, focusing on Javanese Islamic trade culture as an integral aspect of Javanese culture. This culture is characterized by three essential traits: harmonious, functional structural, and transcendental. The application of these characteristics draws from local wisdom rather than directly from the Qur'an or Hadith; however, upon closer examination, they do not contradict Islamic teachings. Thus, the business performance of batik traders in Johar market effectively reflects Javanese Islamic ethical values in trade. Employing qualitative research methods with a single case study design, the analysis followed the framework proposed by Miles and Huberman, which encompasses data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification. Informants were selected through purposive sampling techniques, which included in-depth interviews, documentation review, and focus group discussions. The study revealed that the moral attitudes and business performance ethos of batik traders in the Johar market are grounded in these three characteristics of Javanese cultural moral values: harmonious, functional structural, and transcendental. The identification of their performance is illustrated through various concepts that form several propositions. These findings culminated in the development of a new mini-theory termed the "Religiosity of Sustainable Javanese Trade Performance". This theory comprises four key steps: harmonization of the environment, harmonization of society and government, fostering friendliness and honesty, and implementing educational marketing strategies. These four steps embody moral values rooted in Islamic Shari'a and are scientifically valid as indicators of Javanese Islamic trade performance.
