Abstract

Violence in the name of religion continues to sprout within Indonesian society. This article aims to describe the religious conflict resolution model of the NU Ansor Youth Movement and the Muhammadiyah Youth of the Paciran Lamongan Branch. This research employs a qualitative method with a sociological approach to religion, and data collection was conducted through interviews and the study of relevant literature. The findings of this study indicate that: 1) Both the NU Ansor Youth Movement and Muhammadiyah Youth reject violent models of preaching. 2) There is a difference in attitude towards perpetrators of violence, where the NU Ansor Youth Movement tends to adopt a non-accommodative firm stance, unequivocally rejecting and insisting that perpetrators of violence must be punished according to legal statutes, whereas Muhammadiyah Youth exhibits a firm-accommodative attitude, sternly condemning acts of violence but remaining willing to embrace and invite the perpetrators back to a tolerant and inclusive understanding. 3) The media of resolution employed include issuing advisory letters, press releases to the media, dialogues among community elements, conveying deradicalization insights through religious study sessions (Yasinan and Tahlilan), and the formation of Densus 99 Anti-Terror. 4) The conflict resolution model consists of two stages: long-term, aiming to build cadre awareness of the importance of a tolerant attitude and peaceful living through education, training, social and economic empowerment, ideological development, and the distribution of cadres to the public domain; and short-term, wherein preaching programs are executed sporadically and reactively at the time or after acts of violence to prevent the expansion and escalation of conflict.

Abstract

This study explored the typologies of Islamic thought among Muhammadiyah elites in East Java concerning the discourse on apostasy. Responses vary, with the inclusive view treating apostasy as a private matter between the individual and God, a basic human right with no legal consequences, supported by the Qur'an and the 1945 Constitution. The exclusive view, however, sees apostasy as a public offense, where freedom of choice is conditional and legal repercussions are necessary. The didactic perspective understands apostasy as a moral error, best addressed through education and compassionate guidance to encourage a return to Islam. The findings indicate a dominant trend towards inclusive views but reveal inconsistencies, as elites may express inclusive views on religious freedom while adopting exclusive stances on legal aspects of apostasy. Despite these differences, all maintain a didactic approach when dealing with apostasy within families. This study underscored the dynamic nature of Islamic thought in Muhammadiyah, challenging the perception of rigidity and highlighting the influence of diverse sociological and intellectual backgrounds.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to explore how students at the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya, utilize cyber religion as an alternative source of Islamic learning in the digital era. It investigates their preferred platforms, motivations, types of content consumed, engagement patterns, and perceptions of online religious authority. Methods – Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research collected data through non-participatory observation, in-depth interviews with 15 students, and document analysis of digital artifacts. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns across the data, supported by triangulation to ensure validity. Findings – The results indicate that students actively use platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Islamic websites for religious learning. Their engagement is driven by both academic and personal motives, with fiqh and aqidah being the most frequently accessed topics. Students demonstrate selective trust in digital preachers, forming hybrid models of religious authority. While cyber religion enhances religious understanding, it also raises concerns about information credibility and theological consistency. Research implications – The study highlights the need for Islamic higher education institutions to integrate digital literacy into their curricula, enabling students to critically evaluate online religious content. It also suggests a reevaluation of how authority and authenticity are framed in contemporary Islamic learning environments. Value – This research contributes a localized, empirical analysis of cyber religion among university students in Indonesia. It bridges theoretical concepts of digital religion with real-world student practices, offering insights into the transformation of religious learning in a digitally connected society.

Abstract

This study examines how Muhammadiyah East Java advances progressive, moderate Islamic communication through three official portals, PWMU.co, Klikmu.co, and Majelistabligh.id. We conducted a qualitative content analysis of twelve purposively selected articles published between January 2022 and July 2024, complemented by three semi-structured interviews with editorial staff. The Mediatization of Religion framework provided a lens to trace adaptations to digital media logics, while Uses and Gratifications served as an interpretive lens rather than a formal coding dimension. A codebook defined three categories: (1) Moderation and Wasathiyah, (2) Progressive Islam and Muhammadiyah ideology, and (3) Religion–Science integration. Articles were coded by a primary researcher, with a limited secondary check on a subset; no formal inter-rater reliability was conducted. Findings indicate a preliminary pattern in the use of moderation and progressive frames across platforms, with PWMU.co emphasizing analytical organizational discourse, Klikmu.co prioritizing concise, shareable pieces, and Majelistabligh.id focusing on moderation and deradicalization materials. Religion–Science integration appeared less frequently. Editorial testimonies suggest perceived audience interest in moderation-oriented content, although these indicators were self-reported rather than analytics-based. The study offers preliminary evidence of coordinated platform differentiation that maintains ideological coherence within a regional Islamic organization. Limitations include small sample size, confirmatory sampling, and restricted reliability testing, which constrain generalizability and underscore the need for larger comparative studies that incorporate audience analytics.
