Abstract

Abstract

Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) encompasses feelings of fear, nervousness, and negative self-perceptions that can impede learners’ progress in acquiring a new language. Within the Indonesian educational landscape, where English is introduced as a foreign language, such anxiety presents a formidable obstacle to achieving language proficiency. This research explored the various types and intensities of foreign language anxiety experienced by eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 9 Pematangsiantar in their English learning journey. Employing descriptive qualitative approach, this research gathered data through surveys administered to eighth-grade students, complemented by classroom observations and open-ended student responses. The findings indicated that anxiety levels are most pronounced during speaking activities and examinations, primarily driven by limited vocabulary, apprehension about making mistakes, and classroom environment factors. The predominant manifestations of anxiety included communication apprehension and fear of negative evaluation, with many students expressing feelings of embarrassment and reluctance to actively participate. To cope, students resorted to strategies such as self-research, note-taking, and seeking help from peers; however, these methods tended to be simple and unstructured, limiting their effectiveness. The research underscored teachers’ role played in cultivating a supportive, non-threatening classroom atmosphere where students feel safe to practice English without fear of judgment. Ultimately, this research enriched understanding of foreign language anxiety within Indonesian educational context and provides valuable insights for teachers aiming to implement strategies that reduce anxiety and foster greater confidence among students in English learning.

Abstract

This research analyze the implementation of English language assessments for listening, speaking, reading, and writing based on the principles of validity, reliability, practicality, authenticity, and washback. The assessment is administered into 27 students of seventh grade at SMP Negeri 1 Pematangsiantar. The research aims to evaluate how the designed assessments align with effective assessment principles while addressing classroom realities. The quality of the test is analyzed by using mixed-method approach, quantitative analysis utilized the Pearson Product-Moment and Split-Half methods to measure validity and reliability, while qualitative analysis examined practicality, authenticity, and washback through observation and student feedback. The findings indicate that while several test items fulfilled validity and reliability criteria, many required revision to enhance alignment with learning objectives and improve consistency. Practicality was evident as the assessments could be conducted within time and resource limitations, although challenges appeared in scoring and analysis processes. Authenticity was reflected in the use of materials and tasks closely related to students' daily contexts, promoting meaningful language use. Additionally, the assessments generated positive washback, motivating students to engage actively in learning while providing teachers with insights for instructional improvement. These results highlight the significance of designing assessments that are not only aligned with curriculum goals but also promote comprehensive language skill development. The research contributes to enriching assessment literacy among pre-service teachers and emphasizes the continuous need for reflection and refinement in language assessment practices to foster effective English learning environments in EFL contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of English language assessment based on five core language testing principles: practicality, reliability, validity, authenticity, and washback. The research was conducted at SMA N 1 Siantar, involving 25 eleventh-grade students. A mixed-method approach was applied, combining quantitative data from test scores (multiple-choice and essay) with qualitative insights from observation and rubric-based evaluation. The results show that the assessment was feasible and manageable in the classroom setting. Reliability was high for most components, although the listening section revealed weaknesses in validity. Authentic tasks increased student engagement, while positive washback was observed through enhanced teaching practices and student motivation. These findings demonstrate that principled language assessment, when integrated into the classroom context, can meaningfully support student learning and teaching effectiveness. However, challenges related to item construction and classroom logistics suggest the need for further refinement in future implementations.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the skills that students must have to be able to communicate confidently, exchange ideas, gather information, and share information with others. However, many students face challenges in improving their vocabulary through traditional teaching methods. The gap that this study aims to fill is the lack of research focusing on the effectiveness of English songs using problem-based learning methods in learning strategies to improve speaking skills at the senior high school level. While there is a growing body of research on speaking learning in general, there is limited evidence on students' specific challenges in speaking English. This study aims to determine the effect of English songs using problem-based learning methods in students' speaking mastery in class XI at SMK Swasta 1 Tamansiswa Pematangsiantar. This study uses quantitative methods in collecting data with an experimental design (single group). The results showed a significant increase in the experimental post-test scores, with a t-test value of 12.58, exceeding the critical value of 1.697 at the 0.05 significance level. The findings suggest that English songs significantly enhance speaking learning among students. The study concludes that incorporating interactive and engaging methods such as English songs can effectively improve English speaking skills.

Abstract

The integration of technology in language learning has revolutionized traditional teaching methods, particularly in vocabulary acquisition. This study investigates students' perspectives on using gamification, specifically Kahoot!, in improving English vocabulary among tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 3 Pematangsiantar. The research addresses the gap between conventional vocabulary teaching methods and the need for engaging, technology-enhanced learning experiences. Through a qualitative approach involving 35 participants over a one-week intensive observation period, this study employed interviews, questionnaires, and classroom observations to gather data. The findings reveal that 85% of students demonstrated increased motivation and engagement when learning vocabulary through Kahoot!, with 78% reporting improved retention of new words. Students particularly appreciated the competitive elements and immediate feedback features of the platform. The study concludes that gamification through Kahoot! positively influences students' vocabulary learning experience, suggesting its potential as an effective supplementary tool in English language education.
