Abstract

This study aimed at describing the way the advertiser used the distinctive linguistic expressions in the Cosmopolitan Magazine’s Advertisement. Since the advertisement should attract the consumer as many as possible, the advertiser needed to have a plan to find a solution of this problem in conveying the messages through the advertisement. In this study, the discussion was limited by finding out distinctive linguistic expressions of the advertisement which can be used to convey meanings through text and image. This was a descriptive qualitative study. The analysis involved context of situation analysis, lexicogrammar analysis, and semantic analysis. The analysis revealed that in terms of context of situation, the advertiser delivered persuasive text. Therefore, the advertiser is obliged to say persuasive statements to persuade the consumer or buyer. Meanwhile, lexicogrammar analysis showed that the advertiser delivered the message of the product in order to inform the benefit and achieve the economic goal of the advertised product. The large parts of the clauses of the text were positive adjective which showed the good quality of the advertised product. The semantic analysis showed that personification was the most frequent figure of speech used in the advertisement text. In that sense, the advertiser wanted to give the inanimate object the quality of living thing.

Abstract

This study attempted to identify the kind of students’ difficulties in changing active voice into passive voice in simple present tense and simple past tense, and the cause of difficulties in changing active voice into passive voice in simple past tense and simple present tense. Descriptive qualitative study was used and the subject of this study was the ninth grade students of SMP N 2 Pemalang in the academic year of 2016/2017. The sampling process was administered by applying a random sampling technique. I collected the data by giving try out test in IX H and real test in IX G of SMP Negeri 2 Pemalang. The result of this research showed that in changing active voice into passive voice in simple present tense and simple past tense students faced difficulties in determining: pronoun (57 errors or 7.41%), to be (385 errors or 50.06%), past participle (177 errors or 23.01%), misordering (12.09%), passive order but active form (37 errors or 4.81%), and active order but passive form (20 errors or 2.60%). Based on the interview with the students, the cause of errors can be categorized into interlingual and intralingual. Interlingual errors happened because the interference of a native language into a target language, while intralingual error happened because of the complexity of the target language.

Abstract

This experimental research aims to find out if Simulation Board Game is moreeffective than Conventional Method to improve students’ speaking skill.Around sixty-six students of the tenth grades of SMA Negeri 2 Wonosobo, inacademic year 2015/2016 participating in this research were categorized intotwo groups named experimental and control group. To make it easier tounderstand, the result was presented in the form of statistical data. The post-testscore of both groups is quite far which is 75.12 for the experimental and 60.12for the control group. In addition, the sig (2-tailed) of the T-test which is 0.000explains that there is a significant difference between the students who aretaught by using Board Game and those who are taught by using Conventionalmethod. Furthermore, the N-gain score shows that the effectiveness of speakingskill with Board Game is at the medium level, while the effectiveness ofspeaking skill with Conventional method is at the low level. Based on the dataanalysis result of the research, it can be concluded that use of Board Game ismore effective than the use of Conventional method to teach speaking skill tothe students.
