Abstract

Evolutionary Programming (EP) is one of many types in Evolutionary Computation (EC) that used for optimization process. EP technique is used to find the optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) since it is one of the accessible options schemes that can be used on the system as a reactive power support. Sometimes, it is not necessary to operate all generators in order to perform ORPD to in achieve the objectives. Also, increment of reactive power load to the system will cause voltage decomposes with the increase in transmission loss in the system. Therefore, the proposed method decides the best grouping of generators that should be operated in system by bearing in mind the transmission loss reduction. ORPD will be used to minimize the transmission loss as well the increasing reactive power loading. This method conducted on IEEE 30-bus Test System with multi cases scenario. The best combination of operating generators determined and the transmission loss after optimization is smaller compared to the transmission loss before optimization resulted.

Abstract

Harmonic is one of the power quality disturbances customarily imminent in an unbalanced electrical system. Harmonic represents as the multiple integral of fundamental frequency of voltage and current inflicting towards the shifting in system frequency causing to a disruptive operation of electrical devices. This paper investigates on the performance of passive filter intrinsically by utilizing the inductor and capacitor electrical components to mitigate harmonic problem emanating from an unbalanced electrical system. In particular, explication in this paper will focus on the optimal parameters specification for the double tuned passive filter that used to overcome the phenomenon of harmonic issue. The two case studies constituting with different number of harmonic orders injected in a system were introduced to distinguish effectiveness of double tuned passive filter in solving the aforesaid problems. The parameters configuration of the passive filter are automatically tuned by the MATLAB® software to reduce the total harmonic distortion incurred in a system designed under the Simulink® software.

Abstract

Recent power systems necessitate for maintaining a safe voltage stability as the number of problems such as contingencies and reactive power insufficiency are increasing. In this paper, installation and sizing of Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) devices have been introduced for solving the voltage stability problems under contingencies. The FACTS device to be used is Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC). Besides improving the voltage magnitude at all buses to a desired level, installation of TCSC at proper locations can minimize total transmission losses of the system. To conduct the sizing task, the newly developed Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA) has been implemented as the engine for optimization. Through experimentation, the results proved that the proposed placement and sizing technique has successfully mitigated the voltage stability problems. In addition, the computation time for FPA’s convergence was tolerable with optimum results.
