Abstract

The study of assesment model on chl-a was conducted iii Aquaculture pond of Fisheries and Marine Science Faculty, Riau University from May to September 2007. Digital Number (DN) of digital camera and in situ data were used to generate the assesment model using regression analysis. The equation of Chl-a concentration was derived from dig ital camera, i.e. Y= 0.9259X + 0.0024. Y= chl-a concentration and X= (Band 3/(Bandl + Band 2). The formula showed a significant relation between DN of digital camera and Chl-a (r = 0,87) at the level convidence of 95%. The average of C/il-a assesment using the model is 0.25 mg/i. Both of this algorithm was generated to application of hatchery, fish pond and calm waters.

Abstract

Study on the pollution load index by means of heavy metal parameter in Siak river of Pekanbaru City has been conducted from February to May 2012. Samplings were conductedat two sites which were considered to have different input of pollutants. The heavy metalsstudied were Pb, Cu and Zn. The results showed that almost all water quality parameters, with the exception of zinc in Station 1, have exceeded the quality standards according to PP.82/2001 Republic of Indonesia for Class I and II. Estimated Pb load amounted to 889.55tons/month, Zn 737.10 tons/month and Cu of 726.37 tons/month. Referring to the index ofheavy metal contaminants Pb, Cu and Zn by Kep Men LH No. 115/2003, it is suggested that the condition of Siak River in Pekanbaru City especially at Station 1 was slightly polluted whilest Station 2 was considered as heavily polluted and could be harmful when used as araw material for drinking water as well as for recreation facilities, aquaculture, livestock andfor agriculture irrigation.

Abstract

Until 2009, Riau Province had lost more than four million hectares of forest. The loss of forest coverage was caused by several reasons, such as forest area converted into oil palm plantation (29%), converted into industrial forest (24%) and abandoned deforested land (17%) which was not replaced by any other plants. Up until 2016, Riau Province ranked first in oil palm plantation development with area of 2,430,508 hectares and total of 534,827 workers. The largest amount of replanting activity waste came from oil palm trunks. The treatments of oil palm trunks waste by burning as well as decomposing were considered wasteful and costly. This also leads to a massive carbon emission in the atmosphere, which would cause global warming. Currently, CO2 gas concentration is 40% higher compared to pre-industrial era mainly due to fossil fuel incineration and deforestation. This research aims to measure the dry weight and the amount of carbon and carbon dioxide stock within oil palm trunks waste, as a consideration in taking a policy on preventing and or reducing carbon released to the atmosphere. Oil palm trunks waste came from PT. Perkebunan Nusantara V Persero (state-owned) plantation in Tandum, Riau Province. Data for measuring dry weight and the amount of carbon and carbon dioxide stock was taken randomly from three oil palm trunks. Every trunk was divided into three part (lumbers) which represent the base, middle, and top part of the trunk. Based on the research result, the weight of dry oil palm trunks averages 394.11 kg/tree or 50.45 ton/ha. Carbon stock on oil palm’s biomass averaging at 223.68 kg C/tree or 28.63 ton C/ha, equivalent to 104.97 ton CO2/ha of carbon dioxide stock. The dry weight and the amount of carbon and carbon dioxide in base trunk part are higher than the middle, and the middle part was higher than the top. This data indicates that the base part of the trunk contain the highest amount of biomass and carbon and carbon dioxide stock.

Abstract

A series of counseling and discussion activities with the community in Kampung Baru Sentajo, Sentajo Raya District, Kuantan Singingi Regency were carried out with the purpose to increase knowledge, understanding of environmental sustainability and community empowerment towards efforts to prevent river pollution by community activities themselves. This counseling activity was attended by 30 participants with occupational backgrounds such as teachers, civil servants, farmers, journalists, housewives, and fishermen. Meanwhile, their education level starts from elementary school level to bachelor degree. Analysis of measuring activity achievement used descriptive analysis and descriptive statistical calculations. The descriptive statistical calculation uses the ratio of participants to items taken with the total extension participants who attend as a community in Kampung Baru Sentajo, Kuantan Singingi Regency. The analysis results are presented in the form of a pie graph. The results of the evaluation of the activities showed that 89.9% of the people represented by the counseling participants who attended stated that the existence of rivers is very important for life. Meanwhile, another 11.1%, the existence of the river is important for themselves and for the livelihood of many people. As many as 66.7% of them realized that the river in their environment had changed greatly and 33.3% the condition of the river had changed. As much as 55.6% of all participants who attended this counseling activity, the material presented were useful. While 38.9% is very useful. The interesting thing was that there were 5.6% who stated that extension activities were useless. Even though there were 5.6% of participants who took part in the counseling activities provided were useless, all participants of the event had interesting (50%) and very interesting (50%) content. The hope of the participants is that this counseling can be carried out in every village in Kuantan Singingi Regency, especially in villages that are central to unlicensed gold mining (PETI) by involving all village officials. In addition, the participants also expect to get material on practical ways to reduce pollution by liquid waste.

Abstract

The Chaetodontidae family fish is an indicator species because it has a close relationship with coral reefs based on a strong preference for coral stone as the main component of coral reefs. The existence of these fish can be used as a guide to assess and monitor the condition of coral reefs. This study was conducted in March 2022. The purpose of this study was to determine the abundance of reef fish of the Chaetodontidae family in the waters of Talam Island, to determine the condition of life coral cover and the relationship between the abundance of the Chaetodontidae family and coral cover. The method used in this study is a survey method. Data collection on reef fish of chaetodontidae family was carried out using the Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method and coral reefs condition data collection was done using the Line Intercept Transect (LIT) method. The results showed that the abundance of Chaetodontidae ranged from 710 to 1,430 individuals/ha with an average of 1,110 individuals/ha. The highest abundance of 1,430 individuals/ha at station III with a depth of 6 meters, while the lowest abundance was station II with a depth of 8 meters which was 710 individuals/ha. The percentage of life coral cover at each station ranged from 47.70% - 56.98%, 42.60% - 54.40% and 56.68% - 69.08%. Based on these percentages, the average percentage of life coral cover is 54.74% (good category), and there is a very strong relationship between life coral cover and the abundance of the Chaetodontidae family.
