Abstract

The relationship  between   tree crown  diameter  and/or  tree height which  measured from aerial photos in tropical rain forest is the  object  of this  study. Result of model  analysis  by crown  diameter  and  tree height  variable are as follows   :In  the  harvested primary  forest  condition, the  most  appropriate  model  for all tree samples  is :   Y  =   30,615 -1,580 D + 1,247 T + 0,037 D2 -0,021 DT               with  coefficient   correlation  r =  0,9637.The  most  appropriate  model  by  crown  diameter  variable in the  harvested   primary  forest  condition   for all trees samples  is  :           Y = 1,732  + 0,214 D  with  r =  0,2971.          For Meranti  species,  the  most  appropriate  model  is :          Y = 6,684 - 0,555 D + 0,020 D2 with  r = 0,664  and for Ulin species is:          Y = -  37,736 + 2,738 D -  0,036 D2  with  r = 0, 776.      3. The  model  and  its analysis are valid for  East Kalimantan  only.

Abstract

This study is to evaluate the trend of forest  land-use change as a result of  the community's   activities in pursuing  its need for settlement  and land cultivation  in forest  land in the vicinity of Kampar  river, Riau. To understand the trend of forest  land utilization change, 4 data resource references including aerial photo 1964, general view of 1974 forest  map,  1982 land use map, and a ground  check in 1984, have been used. During two periods i.e., in the years from 1964 to 1974, and from  1974 to 1984, it is known  that an invation  occured into both limited production  forest and conversion forest  in the Sub Districts of Kampar Kiri and Sengingi. An analysis of data, using "population  pressure"  and  "location-quotient formulation"  technique shows  that population  pressure  and low income  causes invation  into  the forest  areas

Abstract

An investigation on lac cultivation was carried out in Probolinggo Forest District in September 1988. The purpose is to find possible ways of increasing the production. Host trees and methods for lac cultivation were observed. The results reveal that: Kesambi trees are good as the host for lac cultivation because they have sap density of 0.16 and sap reaction of 0.59 which which condition is favorable for lac survivals.Higher lac production can be obtained by using host trees that have many branches and twigs. Therefore, host trees need to be pruned in order to provide many new branches and twigs.Lacquor secretion yield can be harvested 5 months after lac cultivation. The lacquor production, thew is sorted intolacquor for cultivation and industrial materials. The cultivated lac can produce lacquor to the amount of three to five fold, depending on the quality of lac cu1tivated and the existance of diseases.

Abstract

To enhance effectiveness of natural resources evaluation an assessment on the trend of land- use and its impacts is necessary. This is needed by regions which are interacted each others and covering large areas. A remote sensing technology is a reliable and appropriate choice for such area. A study on the land-use assessment was employed using manual method through the implementation of Spot, Landsats, and Radar imageries. The results were as follows:1) Until the year 1980, the concession area situated at Long Nah, administratively under authority of PT Inhutani I. East Kalimantan were mostly still covered by virgin forest with occasional and scattered small villages2)  Manual interpretation using imageries of Spot, Landsats and Radars disclosed the following results: (a) Spot imageries turned out to be 64. 7% as the correct figure and 35.3% as the false figure;, (b) Landsat imageries interpreted 53.3% as correct and 46.7% as false; (c) Radar imageris conducted in March and April 1998 revealed 38. 1% as correct and 61.9% as false.3) Changes forest land-use during the period 1980-1998 occurred in low-land dry forest andpartly in swampy forest, which were further converted to the plantation forest. Meanwhile, the changes for other land-uses among others agriculture were almost insignificant ( less than 3%). This is because soil layers in the corresponding land were thin and acidic rendering unsuitable for agriculture activities.4)  In order to reduce high commission error, the appropriate number of strata relevant to the land-use interpretation should not be too detailed but adequately established as simply aspossible.
