Abstract

Regional languages, such as Sundanese, are an important part of the cultural identity that shapes the selfhood of a community. However, in the era of globalization, the use of Sundanese among the younger generation faces significant challenges. This study aims to analyze the use of Sundanese in Kampung Pasauran, Banten, in the context of social change and the dominance of national and international languages. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The respondents consisted of youth aged 15-19 years who were purposively selected. The results show that Sundanese is increasingly rarely used by youth in daily life, with most respondents preferring Indonesian or a mix of Sundanese and Indonesian. Factors influencing this shift include the perception that Sundanese is less modern, the dominance of digital media that promotes the use of Indonesian and English, and the perceived difficulty of learning Sundanese. However, all respondents reported understanding and being able to speak Sundanese, albeit only in limited contexts, such as communication with parents or older relatives. This study underscores the importance of efforts to preserve Sundanese, particularly through education and the strengthening of cultural identity among the younger generation, to prevent further decline in its usage.

Abstract

This study explores the influence of cultural practices on language learning, focusing on how cultural practices, family structures, and societal values affect the way individuals acquire and use a second language. A mixed-method approach was employed, including both qualitative data from semi-structured interviews and participant observation, as well as quantitative data from language proficiency tests and surveys. The findings reveal significant differences in language acquisition patterns across cultural groups, with collectivist cultures emphasizing formal structures and group-oriented learning, while individualistic cultures highlight self-expression and independent study. Cultural values also influence motivation, peer interaction, and classroom dynamics. The study concludes that cultural practices plays a crucial role in shaping language learning experiences and suggests that educators should tailor their approaches to meet the needs of diverse cultural learners.

Abstract

Bilingualism is a prevalent phenomenon in Pandeglang, Banten, where teenagers navigate between the local Sundanese language and the national Indonesian language in various social contexts. This study aims to explore how bilingualism influences the cultural identities of youth in this region. Through qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews and participatory observations, data were collected from 20 teenagers aged 15-18. The study reveals that the use of Sundanese primarily occurs in informal family settings, while Indonesian dominates formal settings like school and public media. Additionally, both languages are creatively integrated in digital spaces, such as social media, where local identity is expressed through Sundanese, and broader national identity through Indonesian. However, challenges in maintaining Sundanese due to the dominance of Indonesian, particularly in urban areas, were noted. The study concludes that bilingualism serves as a bridge between local and national identities, but the sustainability of Sundanese is threatened without strategic interventions, such as incorporating it into formal education and leveraging digital platforms for cultural preservation.

Abstract

The natural philosophy of the Baduy people is very strong. The Baduy people strongly maintain balance and harmony with nature. As a result, they strongly defend the teachings about protecting and preserving nature. That is what makes the Baduy people coexist with nature in harmony. In addition, the Baduy people do not exploit natural resources; Instead, they use what is available with preservation. The Baduy people have the belief that nature is one of the almighty trusts that must be maintained and preserved. This is in accordance with the teaching and philosophical principles of the Baduy tribe, namely "lojor does not cut off, hut does not connect".The preservation of the local wisdom of the Baduy Tribe is a sustainable effort that involves all elements of society. This tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation is not only a cultural heritage, but also a guide to life that is in harmony with nature and noble values. With various conservation efforts, it is hoped that the local wisdom of the Baduy Tribe can continue to be preserved and become an inspiration for the next generation. The application of local wisdom of the Baduy Tribe in maintaining the preservation of the Ciujung River is supported by customary values, traditions, dependence on rivers, and simple life. However, these conservation efforts are faced with various challenges, such as environmental changes, modernization flows, lack of government support, limited access, and different perceptions. Cooperation and synergy from various parties, including the government, academics, and non-governmental organizations, are needed to overcome this challenge and ensure the preservation of the Ciujung River and the local wisdom values of the Baduy Tribe. This research method uses a qualitative approach with a case study approach. Case studies use a variety of data sources to research, elaborate, and explain different aspects of an individual, group, program, organization, or event in a systematic manner. The conclusion is that the Baduy tribe does not exploit nature; They just use what is there and preserve. They believe that nature is an almighty trust that must be guarded and preserved.
