An Analysis of Students’ Writing Skills in Recount Text At The Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 2 KOTA Jambi Suyadi Suyadi

Abstract This research is aimed at improving teaching Writing Skills for Recount Text especially Junior High School students at SMP Negeri 2 Kota Jambi. By using qualitative method this research tries to reveal some difficulties faced by the students in writing Recount Text and giving a resolution to overcome its difficulties. The sample was taken from Eight Grade Students at SMP Negeri 2 Kota Jambi which applied a qualitative research as mentioned by Creswell (2013:334) that Qualitative research is an inquiry process of understanding based on distinct methodological traditions of inquiry that explore a social or human problems. The researcher builds complex, holistic picture, analyze words, reports detailed views of informants, and conducts the study in a natural setting. Findings of this research is considered to be good in category with the percentage of students’ level skills is 6% in very good level, 14% classified in good level, 22% classified in fair level, 28% classified in weak level and 30% classified in poor level. The students’ of writing skills in recount text that weak category, because the students have learnt recount text more than 4 meetings and the teacher have explained seriously. The findings of the research will be useful for the English teachers and the students at Junior High School in using its results as teaching strategy and learning material for the teacher and the students as well.Keywords: Recount text, writing skills, Teaching strategy, Learning materials.

Item Analysis of English Summative Test at The Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 9 Kota Jambi City Academic Year 2018/2019 Ardhan Khariri; Suyadi Suyadi

Summative test is method of evaluation performed at the end of a unit that allows a teacher to measure a student's understanding, typically against standardized criteria. Therefore, to measure students' comprehension of the material learned, the item analysis of summative test is necessary. The research is aimed to find out the level of English Summative Test items for the eleventh grade students of SMAN 9 Kota Jambi 2018/2019. This research is categorized as quantitative method. The researcher took one class XI IPA 1 which consisted 32 members of student. The total number of the test is 40 items. This research is supported by ANATES 4.0 and Manual Counting to analyze item test. Based on item analysis and discussion, the reseacher found that the difficult item was six items ( 15% ) with the test numbers are 3, 6, 8, 26, 27, 29. Secondly, medium item was nineteen items (47,5%) with the test numbers are 1, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 15, 20, 23, 25, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 37, 38, 39, 40. The last, the easy item was fifteen items ( 37,5%) with the test numbers are 2, 9, 12, 13, 14,16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24, 28, 30, 36. Most of the items were categorized as medium interpretation, and only a few in easy and difficult interpretation. It concluded that the total index level of the test is 0,59. Therefore, the summative test is categorized in medium level. The researcher concludes that the English summative test for eleventh grade at SMAN 9 Kota Jambi is not well enough yet and it has quite difficulties as well.Keywords: Item Analysis, English Summative Test.

The Ability of Students’ in Distinguishing between Facts and Opinions in Reading English at SMA Negeri 2 Kota Jambi Rice Indri Nilawati; Suyadi Suyadi

This research is a descriptive study using quantitative descriptive method. This study aims to describe the ability of students to distinguish facts and opinions in reading English texts at SMAN 2 Kota Jambi. The object of this study amounted to 27 students’ of SMA Negeri 2 Kota Jambi. The researcher used random sampling technique in determining the object of the research. In collecting data, researcher used open ended questionnaire. The number of tests given is 10 questions in each text. Data in this study were obtained from the results of tests given to students’. The results of this study based on the results of the analysis of 27 students’ were 9 students get a score of 80-100 which is categorized as & quot; Excellent & quot; (A) with sample code of students 1, students 2, students 4, students 5, students 7, students 8, students 13, students 23, 7 students get a score of 66-79 categorized & quot; Good & quot; (B) with sample code of students 3, students 10, students 17, students 18, students 19, students 21, and students 24, 7 students score 56-65 categorized as & quot; Fair & quot; (C) with sample code of students 6, students 9, students 15, students 22, students 25, students 26 and students 27, 4 students get a score of 40-55 categorized as & quot; Poor & quot; (D) with a sample code of 11 students, 12 students, 16 students, and 20 students. So, students' ability to distinguish between facts and opinions in reading English texts in class XI students of SMA Negeri 2 Kota Jambi is categorized at the level & level based on per- forance; Excellent & qout (A) contains the average scores of students’.Key words: Students’ Ability, Facts and Opinions, Reading English.

Teaching strategy was very much important for smoothed transaction of curriculum. Teaching strategies was a learning activity that must be done by the teacher and student, so that the learning objectives can be achieved effectively and efficiently. teaching strategies were approaches to teaching students. Reading comprehension was the act of understanding what you were reading. While the definition can be simply stated the act was not simple to teach, learn or practice. Reading comprehension was an intentional, active, interactive process that occurs before, during and after a person reads a particular piece of writing. This purpose this research is to know students’ ability about new strategies Bedsra in Reading. The population in this research is student of SMP N 2 KOTA JAMBI in Academic Year 2018-2019. This research uses Experimental Method, the sample of this research is 36 students class VIII B. The researcher uses quantitative method. The data of this research is collected through test. That is pre-test and post-test about narrative text. The result of this research is knowing about new strategies that is Bedsra in teaching reading comprehension. There is progress score from students’ pre-test to students’ post-test score. The average students score for pre-test is 80 with category B. The average post-test score is 40 with category D. The result of the “t-test matched” is 10,34. The number is higher than t table namely 2.03. So Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected.Key words: Bedsra, Teaching Strategies, Reading Comprehension.

The Students’ Reading Comprehension of Narrative Text At The Second Grade Of SMP Negeri 6 Kota Jambi In Academic year 2018/2019 Nuryani Nuryani; Suyadi Suyadi

Many students find some problem in reading. A major problem faced by the students in reading texts is that they often do not comprehend the overall have been major obstacles to understanding. Narrrative text is a text, shich related a serried of logically and chronologically related event that are cause or experienced by factor, there are generic structure, orientation, complication, resolution, reorientation or coda. The research is aimed at knowing how to the students’ reading comprehension focused at narrative text in the second grade of SMP Negeri 6 Kota Jambi in Academic year 2018/2019. The research was conducted in a pre-experimental method. The subject of the research class VIII J, this class consists of 36 students. This research, the data were collected from tests result. The tests consisted of pre-test and post-test, the instrument in this study was a test of students reading in narrative texts and answer the questions about narrative stories, The test was in the form of multiple choice test with five alternative answer a,b,c,d,e with 20 test. The finding of research was the mean score of pre-test is 40, and the mean score of post-test is 61,8. each test to find out the improvements of students’ reading comprehension in narrative texts. The result of the research shows that the comparison of Frequency Scores Pre-Test and Post-Test, the persentage of the students who got the score low category in the pre-test (94,4%) and in post-test score high category (71,8%). It can be seen that in mastering narrative texts that can significantly improve students' reading comprehension skills.Key word : Reading Comprehension, Narrative Text.
