Abstract

This is qualitative research that applied discourse analysis method. The objectives of this research are to clarify (1) the dominant praise used by the English teachers in the classroom interaction and (2) the function of praise given by the English teachers in the classroom interaction. The informants of this research were two students of English Education Study Program who took Pengenalan Lingkungan Persekolahan Program (PLP).The data were collected by using audio recording and note observation. The results of the research show that (1) the teachers dominantly use okay and good in giving Praise and (2) the functions of the praise are given by both of teachers as: to construct the good communication, to support positive learning behavior, to reward good students conduct and achievement and to express approval, admiration and delight during the teaching-learning process. The result also shows that both of teachers still have limited expression in giving praise.

Abstract

This research aims to determine if using POSSE Strategy affects reading comprehension of students majoring in English education of Tadulako University. This is a pre-experimental study using the one group pretest and posttest design. The population was 319 students in academic year 2018/2019. The samples were 35 students selected employing purposive sampling technique. Paper-and-pencil method was used when collecting the data with a test as the instrument. The test was administered twice namely pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed statistically using .05 level of significance and 34 degree of freedom. The result showed that after receiving intervention through POSSE Strategy, students scores got improved. In other words, using POSSE Strategy is effective in improving the sampled-students’ reading comprehension on any kinds of English text.

Abstract

Students who write theses must make an article published in a scientific journal. The most difficult part for non-English students is writing abstract into English. The aims of this study was to find errors made by students in writing abstracts and to find the most dominant types of errors in writing abstracts. The research used descriptive qualitative method. The number of articles published throughout 2020 is 30. Researchers took 30% from the number of articles so the sample of this study is 9.The students' errors in writing abstract are: 1) not understanding the suitability of subject and verb, not changing verb forms to past forms, not understanding the use of connectors, 2) changing word order influenced by source language, 3) reducing suffix determining: word class, singular plural forms, and tenses, 4) removing prepositions and objects, 5) generalizing verb forms for both singular and plural subjects, including past and present forms, so the use of suffixes is not clear. The most dominant type of error made by students is misinformation which is the use of tense and auxiliary verb BE causing errors in subject verb agreement

Abstract

The study focuses on structural ambiguity that found on students’ writing made by fourth semester students of English Education Study Program in Tadulako University. The objectives of the study are to identify the types of structural ambiguity on the students’ writings and to discover the most dominant type of those structural ambiguities. This study used qualitative research method with descriptive research design. The research sample was 23 students. The sample was chosen by using purposive sampling technique. The data of this study are the sentences contain structural ambiguity in students’ writings. The conclusion of the study are six types of structural ambiguity in the students’ writings, they are VP+NP+PP (2 structures), VP+NP+PP1+PP2 (5 structures), NP+Adj.Clause (1 structure), PP+S / S+PP (more than 1 person in a sentence) is 1 structure, VP+NP+VP: Infinitive+PP1+PP2 (1 structure), VP+PP1+PP2 (2 structures) and the most dominant type is VP+NP+PP1+PP2.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find and classify the most dominant type and function of derivational affixes in Hillary Clinton’s speech. This study used a qualitative descriptive design. The data of this research are taken from speech that comes from mass media and non-verbal form. The result of the analysis shows that the most dominant type of derivational affixes in Hillary Clinton’s speech is the suffix –ing (97%) and the most dominant function of derivational affix is to form noun (63%) which attached to the root/base of the verb. The implication of this research is that the research result is useful to enrich the theory of morphological analysis of complex words so that the process of word formation becomes easier for non-native speakers.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out if there is any correlation between students' habits in listening to English songs and the listening skills of the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Sigi. This quantitative research applied a correlational research design. The researcher used simple random sampling. In this research, 32 students were chosen as the sample. The researcher gathered information through questionnaires and tests. Both instrument data analyses showed a Pearson Product Moment of 0.567. The Category was moderate. The value of the r-table was 0.349. rxy is more than rtable, according to the statistics. The alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, while the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. This indicates a correlation between students’ habits in listening to English songs and the listening skills of the eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 6 Sigi.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine whether implementing Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) could enhance students' reading comprehension. A quasi-experimental design employed pre-test and post-test assessments as measurement tools. The researcher employed purposive sampling and selected a sample of 40 students. The collected test data were then subjected to analysis using the test of paired samples in the SPSS v. 26 for Windows. The findings from the data analysis using the test of paired samples revealed a significant difference in scores between the pretest and posttest for the experiment class. The computed p-value (two-tailed) was 0.002, which falls below the predetermined significance level of 0.05. Consequently, the hypothesis has been accepted. In summary, Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) has been implemented, and results demonstrate that it has enhanced the reading comprehension skills of SMA Negeri 5 Palu's 10th-grade science students.

Abstract

This research aims to prove how (KWL) Know-Want-Learn strategy can enhance the reading comprehension of MAN 1 Parigi students in the tenth grade. This research used a quantitative approach using a single pretest and posttest research design. The researcher conducted her research in two classes, one experimental and one control. In the experimental class, there were 28 students, while there were 27 in the control class. The researcher employed pretest and posttest to gather data. Paired sample t-test aided SPSS application version 25 for Windows was used to analyze the data. Based on the findings of this research, it is possible to conclude that (KWL) Know-Want-Learn strategy succeeded in improving the reading comprehension of tenth-grade students at MAN 1 Parigi. This is proven from the paired sample t-test analysis that the significance value (2-tailed) was 0.000 < 0.05, meaning there is a significant distinction within the student learning outcomes for the pretest and post-test.

Abstract

Self-confidence plays a crucial part in speaking English, and many students are still less confident when speaking, which causes them to not engage more in speaking activities. This research aimed to know how self-confidence works in students speaking to ninth-grade students, specifically at SMP Negeri 9 Palu, and the factors that contributed to their lack of confidence. For the topic, 30 students were selected as the sample and given twelve questions from the questionnaire and five interview questions. The research method was a descriptive qualitative method. The results that the researcher has done are self - confidence indeed works on students’ speaking. Students’ lack of confidence is caused by some factors, which are afraid of making mistakes when they speak, they still have lack of vocabulary, lack of grammar, feel of under pressure every time the teacher asks them to speak, shyness, nervous, feel of uncomfortable, not enjoying when they attempt to speak, insecurities of their friends who have the good ability more than them. This study is expected to contribute to developing students’ speaking ability and solve students’ problems by knowing their speaking and what factors contribute to their unconfident. Moreover, this study also may help teachers treat students so they can participate actively in class without being constrained with self–confidence.

Abstract

This research aimed to discover how using flashcards affected seventh-grade SMP Negeri 2 Toili students' vocabulary growth. The research design used quantitative research. The researcher employed a complete sampling approach to choose the sample. A sample of 42 students was chosen for this research. The research conducted pre- and post-tests to collect data. According to the Paired Sample Statistics table, the average student score for the experimental class is equivalent to the post-test results, which are 86.67 points greater than the pre-test result of 64.76. Given that the significance (2-tailed) value is known to be between 0.001 and 0.05, H0 is refused, whereas H1 is approved. The fact that there was a distinction between the pre- and post-tests indicates that employing flashcards to increase vocabulary among seventh-graders at SMP Negeri 2 Toili had an impact.
