Abstract

A hybrid method has been suggested for optimal placement of multiple renewable distribution generations (RDGs) in microgrid system. The analytical approaches have not been appropriated for optimal placements of multiple solar photovoltaic (SPV) based on RDGs alone. In this work, hybridization of a fuzzy method and particle swarm optimization (PSO) search for the optimal placement of multiple RDGs in microgrid systems for decreasing the active power loss has been proposed. In this approach, the sizes of RDGs are evaluated at every bus by PSO method while the locations are determined by fuzzy based technique. The objective function (OBF) has been minimized under operating constraints. The improvements in nodal voltage profile have been observed. To confirm the proposed hybrid approach, results have been compared with bat algorithm (BA) technique and existing fast improved analytical (IA) method results. The suggested technique has been tested on 33-bus and 69-bus microgrid system.

Abstract

The optimal sizing of the isolated hybrid microgrid using an optimization technique was proposed. The hybrid system features WT, PV and conversion systems were used to feed the electrical load demand. A HOMER software was used to model system performance during a time of one year, considering Sensitivity variations in both the availability of renewable energy sources and variations in the load demand. The optimal solution was obtained with respect to decrease the cost of energy (COE) and the loss of power supply probability (LPSP) over a project lifetime of 25 years to improve the isolated operation of the microgrid. The aim of this study is to investigate an optimum combination of different energy systems which can supply electricity to a rural area in Egypt. The results show the COE for the optimal model was found 0.139 $/kWh which is less than half of the PV or WT system.

Abstract

Current situation in Iraq had led to extensive blackouts which needs an expansion in generation capacity. On the other hand the government has reduced the budget allocated for energy resource development and it seems this situation will sustain for the coming years.  So the fulfilment of the load demand is the biggest challenge for the ministry of electricity with limited budget. In this paper the authors have proposed a method to reduce the power losses and therefore improve the voltage profile for low voltage (LV) distribution system that results in reduction of blackouts. The method involves the repositioning of the distribution transformer (DTR) from the existing location and the replacement of the overhead conductor cross section area for an existing low voltage distribution system (LVDS). This method has been applied to a 20-node low voltage radial distribution network in the general directorate of north distribution electricity (GDNDE), Iraq, where voltage profile and losses are unsatisfactory. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method also in terms of the economic feasibility. It is observed that the system average voltage profile is improved by 15%, tail end voltage enhanced by 19.7% and losses are reduced by 78% for existing the LVDS.
