Abstract

This research aims to examine the strategies used by female politicians in Bali to balance their political careers with their social and cultural roles in the family and society. In addition, this study will also analyze the factors that influence the development of Balinese women's political careers. The method used is descriptive qualitative research with data collection through interviews and documentary studies. Interview data was collected from Balinese women politicians who are running for legislative members (Caleg) in the 2024 legislative elections (Pileg) from the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), as well as from academics experienced in gender studies. The results showed that time management strategies and effective communication approaches are solutions for Balinese women in their multi-tasking roles. In addition, Balinese women are expected to innovate creatively by using technology to facilitate the management of household and work affairs in line with the concept of work-family balance. There are three important factors that influence Balinese women's political careers: first, cultural factors related to the still dominant patriarchal culture; second, structural factors reflecting the lack of allocation of strategic positions for women; and third, institutional factors related to the weakness of existing regulations to protect women's interests in the political arena.

The data were collected through observation and documentation of status message uploads on two Facebook accounts belonging to former terrorists and supported by related literature studies. The two Facebook accounts belonging to former terrorists generally contain preaching messages with general themes, deradicalization, and counter-radicalization. This paper shows that the preaching messages delivered by former terrorists have distinctive material that is different from other preachers. The delivery of preaching messages by former terrorists through social media platforms can have a positive impact on countering terrorism and promoting peaceful Islam.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between seat acquisition probabilities and the acquisition of minor party seats in the 2019 Surabaya City DPRD election. This research is crucial because theoretically the proportional representation electoral system quota/allocation of electoral district seats (dapil) has the probability to be accessed by all parties participating in the election, but in fact in the 2019 Surabaya City DPRD election the quota/allocation of seats was dominated by large parties. This research method is library research with the analysis technique using the Pearson Product Moment statistical test. According to the research results, first, the relationship between seat acquisition probability and minor party seat acquisition is negative and insignificant. The results of the research hypothesis test show rcount (-0.753) < rtable (0.997). Second, the relationship between these two variables controlled by the threshold variable is significantly positive. The research hypothesis test result is rcount (0.000) > rtable (0.997). Based on this research: (1) the electoral system of proportional representation quota/allocation of electoral district seats is not accessible to all minor parties participating in the election; (2) the size of electoral districts with seat quotas in the medium-large criteria does not have a significant positive effect on the acquisition of seats of parties participating in the election; (3) the threshold simultaneously affects the significant positive relationship between the size of the medium-large quota electoral districts and the acquisition of seats of parties participating in the election; and (4) the acquisition of party votes below the lower threshold still has the probability to get the remaining seats.

Abstract

This study explores local politics in Madura, Indonesia, during the early years of regional autonomy following the fall of the New Order, a period marked by the rise of civilian elites in positions previously dominated by the military. It focuses on two influential local actors—kiai (Islamic religious leaders) and blater (local strongmen)—and examines their role in shaping regional elections (Pilkada) in Bangkalan. The research aims to understand community perceptions of these elites’ involvement and its implications for democratization. Adopting a qualitative, descriptive approach, data were collected through interviews and documentation, involving kiai, blater, community leaders, party figures, academics, cultural figures, and residents from both urban and rural areas. The study draws on the theoretical frameworks of interest groups and democratization. Findings indicate that Kiai engage in politics by running for office, endorsing candidates, campaigning, and issuing religious guidance to mobilize followers, while blater employ intimidation and coercion to influence voting behavior. Although both elites are central to local elections, their participation does not advance substantive democracy; instead, it constrains political choice and undermines citizens’ autonomy. The study argues that the entanglement of religious authority and local power structures in Bangkalan illustrates a complex pattern of elite influence, highlighting the challenges of achieving genuine democratization in post-reform Indonesian regions.
