Abstract

The Programme for International Student Assessment result of being the lowest in reading comprehension is the main reason that compelled the researcher to conduct the study with the use of the Jolly Phonics program in strengthening language literacy. In addition, at the Division of Cabuyao, there is an issue regarding reading difficulties among Grades 1 to 3 of selected public elementary schools. Despite many strategies being applied, they still find it difficult to read and comprehend. The purpose of this paper is to determine the effectiveness of the Jolly Phonics program in strengthening language literacy and test the hypotheses that there is no significant relationship between the performance of the two groups considering the results of the post-test in language literacy. There were two groups of participants in the study, the experimental group, who utilized the Jolly phonics program, and the comparison group, who were subjected to the Marungko approach. Each approaches utilized thirty (30) pupils from Grades 1 to 3, combining the sum total of 540 participating pupils for three selected elementary schools. The instrument used was the pretest and post-test validated by experts from the City School Division Office. A quasi-experiment research design guided the conduct of the study. A frequency percentage distribution, t-test for independent means, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were among the statistical tools employed in the study. Findings revealed that there was a significant difference in the performance between and among the participating public elementary schools (ES)for Grades 1 to 3. For instance, in Grade 1, it was noted that the performance of Banay – Banay ES was a bit higher than Butong ES and was considerably higher than that of San Isidro ES; In Grade 2, Banay – Banay ES topped in their reading performance compared to other two elementary schools; and  In Grade 3,  San Isidro ES at this time showed better performance, running over in reading proficiency the other two elementary schools. The action plan was proposed by the researcher of the study to strengthen the language literacy of the learners in the Division of Cabuyao

Abstract

This study focused on determining the factors that influence the learners’ participation in Physical Education (PE) under the New Normal; it also investigated perceptions about teaching quality, level of readiness in distance learning, and the mean level of participation in PE in accordance to MELCS. It further looked into the significant relationships between factors of teaching quality; learners’ level of readiness to distance learning as against learners’ participation; and learners’ demography. This study offers a lot of learning opportunities about simplified and essential teaching modalities, which are focused and easy for learners, under the New Normal environment and under the threat of being infected with Covid-19. Frequencies, percentage, means, standard deviation, Pearson product moment of correlation, multiple linear regression, and hierarchical linear regression were the statistical tools applied in the analysis of data collected from selected Junior High School learners from 25 districts in the Division of Laguna. Major findings from the study are that (i) learners have a high level of perception of teaching quality in terms of cognitive activation, supportive climate, and classroom management; (ii) learners have a high level of readiness on distance learning in terms of availability of technology, use of technology, self-confidence, acceptance, and time management skills; and (iii) a high mean level on learner’s participation in PE according to their respective MELCS in terms of personalized exercise programs, physical activity participation, physical activity/fitness assessment, and skills demonstration. This study recommended that physical education teachers may provide students with more enhanced and localized activities that are tailored to their interests and appropriate for this new normal setting.

Abstract

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic created a radical transformation in teaching-learning in schools worldwide. This phenomenon challenged the self-efficacy of teachers and school heads in public schools in the Philippines, specifically on how to apply social media learning, which is a new modality. Through a mixed research method, 232 schoolteachers and 26 school heads participated in answering an adopted modified questionnaire; and ten school personnel participated in answering a researcher-made interview guide. The findings showed that profile variables such as age, sex, educational background, and length of service did not significantly correlate with school performance. In contrast, the challenges associated with self-efficacy in terms of educational management, instructional leadership, moral leadership, and application of social media learning tools were all significantly correlated with school performance. This indicated that self-efficacy improves school performance in both teachers and school heads and is influenced by their positive and healthy attitudes. From the qualitative data, the derived themes have implications with economic conditions, knowledge, and skills on the application of technology, transfer of knowledge to students, maintaining coordination, collaboration, and support from educational stakeholders, curriculum design and adherence with educational standards, imposing disciplinary measures, and compliance with school requirements. Officials in the educational setting should consider upgrading policies on personnel capability and capacity building, enhancing professional development, and equipping them with the application of modern teaching methods. All these concepts were considered in a proposed recommendation to the Department of Education, Philippines, for policy enhancement.
