Abstract

The roles of lecturers in universities cannot be under-estimated.  This is because lecturers are the bones who interpret the content of the curriculum and ensure students become a law abiding and useful member in the society.  Hence, lecturers are expected to be efficient.  This study however investigated job stress and lecturers’ efficiency in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.  The population of the study comprised all academic staff in all the 10 Faculties and two Colleges of the University.  A sample of 50 participants was selected from each of the five purposively selected faculties making a total of 250 participants altogether.  Adapted questionnaire titled titled ‘Job Stress and Lecturers’ Efficiency (JSLEQ) was used to collect information from the respondents.  The instrument was validated and trial tested on population outside the sample. The reliability index of the instrument was 0.91 using Crobatch Alpha method of analysis.  Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to answer the research question and test the hypothesis respectively.  The results showed that anxiety (  = 2.92) was the most prominent stress of the six-stress found among lecturers in Obafemi Awolowo University while the least prominent stress was heart palpitation (  = 2.69).  In addition, the results revealed that stress has significant influence on lecturer’s efficiency (0.54 > 0.157 at p.<0.05) in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.  The study recommends employment of seasoned counsellors and equip the counselling unit with 21st century equipment that can be used to manage anxiety among the entire workers in the Nigerian universities

Abstract

Students are considered an important component of the university.  In fact, without them, existence of a university may be a mirage.  However, undergraduates expressed dissatisfaction with the state of electricity, security patrol vehicles, unavailability of close circuit television and other safety devises in Nigerian universities.  As a result, this study investigated Campus Security Measures and Perceived Undergraduate Satisfaction in Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria.  The study population comprised undergraduates from the 10 Faculties and one College in OAU.  A sample size of 300 was selected for the study.  A self-designed questionnaire titled ‘Campus Security and Undergraduate Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSUSQ) was used to collect with reliability index of 0.83.  Two research questions were raised and answered and one hypothesis tested by the study.  The study found that the perception of OAU undergraduates on effectiveness of campus security measures was very high, and the effectiveness of security measures in place by OAU administration was high.  In addition, the study revealed a significant composite influence of the campus security measures on undergraduate satisfaction.  It was recommended that the university administration need to improve in providing more security facilities that will guarantee student satisfaction on campus.

Abstract

The global economy, health, and education—especially university education—have all been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. It exposed the seeming disparity and current injustices in the global north and south's access to quality education. Therefore, this study examined the desire of students to attend classes virtually in the post-COVID-19 era; identified perceived difficulties faced by students in online learning environments; and established favoured method of education delivery by students in the post-COVID-19 period. These were with a view to explore university students’ experiences during the COVID-19 outbreak. Using the quantitative survey approach, the study population covered 35,000 undergraduate and graduate students while a sample size of randomly selected 375 students was determined using the research advisor. A 25-item electronic google survey titled ‘Post COVID-19 University Education’ (PCUE) was designed and circulated via various students’ platforms on social media (WhatsApp and Telegram) to elicit responses. The research questions were analysed and presented descriptively. It was found that students at universities favour blended learning methods have difficulties that prevent them from participating in virtual classes, and do not frequently visit virtual classrooms. Consequently, it was recommended that university instructors be further encouraged to use the hybrid mode of instructional delivery.
