Abstract

Antioxidants are compounds that are capable of neutralizing free radicals. One plant with potential antioxidant properties is Peperomia pellucida. Objective: This study aimed to determine the antioxidant activity, total phenolic content, and total flavonoid content of extracts of the leaves and stems of Peperomia pellucida. Methods: Antioxidant activity was tested using the DPPH method, while the total phenolic and flavonoid contents were measured using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Extraction was performed via reflux using three different solvents: n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol. Results: The highest antioxidant activity was found in the ethanol extract of the leaves, with an IC50 value of 36.85 µg/mL, and in the stems, with an IC50 value of 71.28 µg/mL. The highest total phenolic content in the ethanol extract of the leaves was 14.46 mg GAE/g and that in the stems was 12.82 mg GAE/g. The highest total flavonoid content in the ethanol extract of the leaves was 12.12 mg QE/g and that in the stems was 10.49 mg QE/g. Conclusion: The results indicated that the ethanol extract of Peperomia pellucida leaves exhibited very strong antioxidant activity. Keywords: antioxidants, DPPH, phenolic, flavonoids, suruhan Plants

Abstract

Abstract

Rational use of drugs aims to give therapy according to patient’s clinical needs. Based on Ni komang's research (2021) there are still inaccuracies in the use of antipsychotic drugs. The purpose of this study was to determine the evaluation of the use of Antipsychotics based on the parameters of right indications, drugs, dosage, and frequency in outpatient schizophrenia patients at the West Java Provincial Mental Hospital. The study used a method with descriptive presentation of data and retrospective data collection. Data obtained period October-December 2022 from 130 patients, this study evaluated the use of Antipsychotics with the parameters of right indications, drugs, dosage, and frequency then the data will be analyzed based on the criteria for drug use from Pharmacotherapy A Pathophysiologic Approach 11th and PIONAS. The results of the study on the use of Antipsychotics in schizophrenic patients at the Java Provincial Mental Hospital based on Pharmacotherapy A Pathophysiologic Approach 11th and PIONAS obtained the right indications as much as (100%), the right drugs (100%), the right dose (98%), and the right frequency (98%).

Abstract

Diabetic foot ulcers are caused by neuropathy and/or peripheral arterial disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. These infections are commonly treated with empirical antibiotics. However, excessive or inappropriate antibiotic use may lead to resistance and poor treatment outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate antibiotic prescribing patterns, rationality, and potential drug interactions in diabetic ulcer patients at a government hospital in Bandung from January to December 2023. A retrospective observational design was used to analyze medical records of 63 patients. The most frequently used single antibiotics were ceftriaxone (51%), cefixime (20%), and ceftizoxime (17%), while the most common combination therapy was ceftizoxime + metronidazole (24%). Evaluation of antibiotic rationality showed 100% appropriate indication, 90.48% appropriate drug selection, and 98.41% appropriate dosage. Despite this, 33.33% of prescriptions had potential drug interactions with commonly co-prescribed medications. These findings indicate generally rational antibiotic use with areas for improvement in drug selection and interaction management. The study highlights the importance of continuous monitoring and rational prescribing to prevent antimicrobial resistance and ensure patient safety.

Abstract

Hyperuricemia, characterized by high uric acid levels, is associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular diseases. Xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR), an enzyme central to uric acid generation, is implicated in oxidative stress and diminished vascular function. It has become a focal point for potential therapeutic interventions. This investigation aimed to assess the influence of combined ethanol extracts of Kaempferia galanga L. and Zingiber officinale (KGZE) on xanthine oxidase activity and arterial rigidity in hyperuricemic rat models. Furthermore, the research sought to explore these extracts' potential in managing hyperuricemia and its associated vascular disorders. Hyperuricemia was established in Wistar rats by administering potassium oxonate at 4.5 mg/kg via injection. A total of 25 rats were divided into five groups: a normal control group receiving 0.5% CMC, a positive control group with hyperuricemia, a reference group treated with allopurinol (1.8 mg/kgBW), and two experimental groups receiving KGZE at doses of 50 mg/kgBW and 100 mg/kgBW. All rats consumed 25% fructose in their drinking water for 28 days. This study measured uric acid levels and arterial stiffness, revealing that KGZE significantly reduced uric acid levels and improved arterial stiffness, indicating its potential as an XOR inhibitor.

Abstract

Stunting is strongly associated with impaired immune function, as chronically malnourished children tend to have weaker immunity and are more vulnerable to infection. This study aimed to examine the effect of temulawak–black cumin herbal honey on the adaptive immune system in stunted children. A quasi-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design was used. The findings showed that the intervention significantly increased height-for-age (TB/U) in the treatment group compared to the control group (p = 0.014). Weight-for-age (BB/U) also rose significantly within the treatment group (p = 0.013), but no significant difference was found relative to the control group (p = 0.192). The supplement significantly elevated IgM levels in the treatment group (p = 0.001), though again without a significant difference from the control (p = 0.546). CD4 concentration decreased in the treatment group (p = 0.003), but the change was not significantly different from the control (p = 0.682). In conclusion, temulawak–black cumin herbal honey can improve nutritional status and enhance adaptive immunity by increasing IgM levels, although it does not raise CD4 levels and instead slows CD4 decline. However, its effectiveness in increasing IgM and CD4 concentrations compared to controls is not significant.
