<![CDATA[The formulation of the problem of this research is how the development of railway facilities and infrastructure, railway public services, and what strategy is done by PT KAI in facing the competition of land transportation mode in South Sumatera from 1998 until 2015. The purpose of this research is to know how big changes and developments of railway facilities and infrastructure, railway public services, and what strategies will be undertaken by PT KAI in facing the competition of land transportation mode in South Sumatra from 1998 to 2015. This research was conducted from August 2016 to November 2017 using the method historical data collection techniques derived from interviews, literature studies and observations made. The results of the study explained that the development of railway transportation in the field of facilities, infrastructure, and public services increases every year. Evidenced by the existence of various innovations conducted by the Division III of South Sumatra both in terms of infrastructure facilities (locomotives, carriages, roads) and public services. Moreover transport of goods in the form of coal that donate foreign exchange to the country amounted to 2 trillion rupiah each year.
