This research aimed to study the effect of hardness on the appearance and the growth of rainbowflsh of Sulawesi (Marosatherim ladigesi). The parameters measured were body length, survival rate, and body color. The experiment was conducted using aquariums(80 x 40 x 40 cm3) filled with water each contained hardness concentrations ranged from 50 - 100; 100 - 150; to 150 - 250 mgCaCO3/L) and added with 25 fish sized of 1,5 - 2 cm. The fish was reared and fed with Chironorma. The research has been conducted on Laboratory of Research Center for Limnology-LIFI in March-June 2007, The result showed that the best growth measured as the body length was 0,019 cm/day obtained from the fish grew on water contained hardness concentrations ranged from 100 to 150 mg CaCO3/L and the best survival rate was 100% obtained from the fish grew on water contained hardness concentrations ranged from 150 to 250 mg CaCO3/L. However, the results of both treatments did not show significant difference statistically (ANOVA; p>0.05). The difference of appearance was shown on fish grew on water contained hardness concentrations ranged from 150 to 250 mg CaCO3/L where the fish body were relatively clean and bright.
