Background: Malaria remains a health problem in Indonesia, especially in rural areas. Families have an important role in preventing, treating, and caring for malaria. Therefore, the role of families in combating malaria needs to be strengthened through health education and modification of the home environment. Objective: This study aims to determine the role of families in preventing, treating, and caring for malaria, as well as the factors that influence family behavior in addressing malaria in Padedewatu Village, West Sumba Regency. Method: This study used a qualitative approach with a single case study design. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with five families who had family members who had suffered from malaria and a nurse. Data analysis used content analysis techniques. Results: The research findings showed that families have an important role in preventing, treating, and caring for malaria, such as providing health education on the importance of avoiding mosquito bites, using mosquito nets, and modifying the home environment. Factors that influence family behavior in addressing malaria are a lack of knowledge and awareness about malaria, economic factors, and beliefs in traditional treatment. Conclusion: The role of families in addressing malaria is very important, especially in prevention and care. Health education and modification of the home environment need to be strengthened to increase family awareness of the importance of preventing and treating malaria. The government and health centers need to hold more intensive health education programs on malaria for rural communities. Further research can deepen the study on factors that influence family behavior in addressing malaria.
