Abstract

Quasi-Linear Convective System (QLCS) as one of the phenomena that can cause heavy rains, potency of thunderstorm, and destructive strong winds. This research investigated the occurrence of QLCS in December 2018 – May 2019 in the coverage of Makassar weather radar are which has a C-Band-based weather radar monitoring network with CMAX, Central Tracking, Combined Moment, and Vertical Shear products. The aim of this conducted observation is to find out the distribution pattern of spatial-temporal and wind profile of QLCS and its impact related to thunderstorm. The result shows there are 32 identified cases of QLCS in the Makassar weather radar coverage area which has the duration mostly between 30-60 minutes. The dominant location of QLCS formation is founded in the coastal ocean (CO) which the initiation time mostly happened at night (18.00-23.59 local time). The most direction of propagation is east-southeast by 47% with propagation speed of QLCS cells dominated by slow moving by 47%. Vertical Wind Shear (VWS) speed caused by QLCS, 3 of the 4 types of formation of the maximum VWS speed are always when the phase matures. There are 10 of 32 cases (31,25%) of QLCS which identified as its impact related to the occurrence of thunderstorm. Keywords: QLCS, Weather Radar, VWS, Thunderstorms
