NON-PHARMACOLOGICAL INTERVENTIONS ON ANXIETY AMONG COLORECTAL CANCER: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Studies reported different non-pharmacological interventions to treat anxiety in colorectal cancer patients, but still their effectiveness is unknown. We aim to evaluate the non-pharmacological interventions used to treat anxiety in colorectal cancer. We performed a systematic review and searched PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, CINAHL, and Scopus. We selected RCTs published between 2011 and 2021 in the English language. We assessed the quality of articles using JBI Critical appraisal tools for RCTs. Most studies – 8 out of 12 RCTs – showed a significant reduction in anxiety scores after using non-pharmacological interventions. The most popular interventions were education, relaxation, psychological intervention, naturopathy, yoga, dietary, consultation, physical activity, and entertainment activities. The non-pharmacological interventions used in treating anxiety significantly improve anxiety scores in CRC patients after treatment in almost included studies by applying mixed methods of education, relaxation, psychological intervention, naturopathy, yoga, dietary, consultation, physical activity, and entertainment activities.
