Abstract

Forests are important to society as ecosystems containing trees, plants, animals, microorganisms and soil that interact with each other. In Indonesia, forests are often the setting for folklore and myths that play a role in social, religious and cultural activities. Qualitative research through literature study shows that the management of Wonosadi Forest reflects strong environmental wisdom. Two versions of myths about Onggoloco from Duren and Sidorejo hamlets emphasize the importance of protecting the forest. The people of Duren Hamlet and Siderejo under Beji Village, Ngawen District, Gunung Kidul, have been reforesting since 1966 to restore damaged forests. They protect the forest through reforestation, block division, and planting tumpeng sari, and honor Onggoloco through Sadranan ceremonies. These values of local wisdom and ecological approaches have succeeded in preserving Wonosadi Forest, making it an example of wise local tradition-based forest management.
