Abstract

Colorectal cancer is the third highest incidence in the world and surgery is the most common modality performed. The healing process is relatively longer, so the issue of post-surgical recovery becomes very important. A person cannot eat and drink comfortably if they are nauseous, vomiting, causing the recovery process to take a long time. Chewing sugarless gum is believed to reduce nausea and vomiting after surgery, thus speeding up the recovery of the digestive system. This study aimed to explain the application of nursing care with a focus on chewing gum intervention to reduce Post Operative Nausea Vomitus (PONV) in post colectomy patients. The method used was a case study involving 2 patients after colectomy surgery with a nursing diagnosis of Nausea (D.0076) using the SDKI. The chewing gum used was sugarless gum. Post-operative assessment nausea & vomiting sheet was used as an evaluation standard to assess nausea and vomiting. Evaluation was carried out 15 minutes after chewing gum. The results of the study showed that nausea felt reduced, after 2 hours after chewing gum, nausea returned with a score of 7 for client 1, and 8 for client 2 at a tolerable level. It was concluded that chewing sugarless gum is a cheap and effective method of reducing post-colectomy nausea and vomiting, so it can be chosen as a nursing intervention for the nursing problem of post-colectomy nausea.
