This study aims to look at the the concept and application of understanding by design as a backward design curriculum for mathematics learning in Indonesia. The articles used as the core review source for this research were 5 articles that had a reputation of SINTA standards. From the results of the review, it was found the understanding, role and steps of UbD as an integral part of learning in Indonesia today. In mathematics learning, which is often a problem for students, the problem can be overcome by creating effective and interesting learning through learning with the UbD framework. Of course, the teacher's role as designer and facilitator has had a big influence, even though UbD is given the freedom to determine the direction of the material, this does not mean that the teacher underestimates the characteristics of students as well as their learning styles and interests. The conclusion of this research is to show the main focus in the understanding by design approach, namely emphasizing the desired results (learning objectives).
