Abstract

Communication apprehension is often a fundamental problem that hinders individuals when engaging in social interactions. This study aims to determine the effect of communication apprehension on dissociative social interactions in generation Z in Banda Aceh, using the theory of communication apprehension by James C. McCroskey. This study uses an explanatory quantitative research method, a Google Form survey was distributed to 100 respondents selected using the Accidental Sampling technique with the provision that they had or were experiencing communication apprehension, which was confirmed by screening questions. The results of the hypothesis testing showed that the t-count value was greater than the t-table value (3.775> 1.660) with a determination coefficient of 0.127, so communication apprehension influenced dissociative social interactions in generation Z by 12.7%. Based on the respondents' answers, the uncontrol dimension contributed the most to the communication apprehension variable, while the contravention dimension contributed the most to the dissociative social interaction variable. From these results, it can be assumed that generation Z, which in this study was represented by students, tends to have low self-control, especially when required to speak in public and tends to hide feelings of dislike towards others. Linear regression analysis produced a regression coefficient of 0.331, which is statistically significant at the ? = 0.000 level. It is concluded that communication apprehension has a positive and significant effect on dissociative social interaction in students. This means that the higher the communication apprehension, the higher the dissociative social interaction in the respondents.   Keywords: Communication Apprehension, Social Interaction, Dissociative Social Interaction, Gen Z
