Abstract

This study is to find out English Department students’ perception towards AI in writing their thesis. The method that used is Descriptive Qualitative Research which used Interview as an instrument. The population of this study is English Department students of Universitas Negeri Padang. Then, the sample is used purposive sampling (based on the researcher’s need), the sample is English Department students from all gender whose doing thesis and batch 21. The findings of this study showed that English Department students used AI assistance for supporting their thesis, especially for four main indicators, generating idea (for drawing the ideas, issues, and topics, searching theories, understanding about articles/topics), finding article (for searching the articles, giving the links of articles, citing, summarizing, and reviewing the articles, and also writing the sources of articles), paraphrasing sentence (for paraphrasing sentences, searching synonyms, changing active into passive, and revising the paragraphs), and fixing grammar (for checking the grammar errors, translating, and also fixing the word order, tenses, and punctuation). So, in conclusion this study founded how English Department students used AI in writing thesis and many AI supports that they usually used.
