Abstract

The Indonesian nation, just like all other nations in the world, has a clear identity. The identity as a nation can be seen through their culture. The cultural heritage of this nation must always be preserved, guarded, cherished by their owners, especially by the younger generation. A national television media’s role, in this case TVRI, becomes very important in the effort to maintain, care for and love its culture. The role done by the Republic of Indonesia television media during the New Order was seen to be very successful. After the emergence of private television stations, the nation’s attention to culture in this country began to recede. Many of them were mostly oriented on business and give less attention to matters in relation to culture. Claims against of nation’s cultural heritage by Malaysian at some point in the past made us realized the importance of keeping and maintaining one’s own cultural heritage. These incidents should be a warning for the television media managers in Indonesia to take part in this responsibility. The appearance of popular culture, which is very popular with the young people of this nation, spread through by the television media in Indonesia is another phenomenon that needs to be given attention to. The presence of popular culture could displace one’s own culture. Invasion of popular culture is a form of cultural imperialism. It is also one form of another threat to the existence of Indonesia culture itself.
