Abstract

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Eimeria spp. infection in broiler chickens (Gallus domesticus) in Kalibaru Subdistrict, Banyuwangi Regency. Eimeria spp. is a protozoan that causes coccidiosis, a disease affecting the chicken’s digestive tract and causing significant economic losses. The study employed a descriptive method with a cross-sectional approach. Fecal samples were collected from five farms across five villages. A total of 75 fecal samples were analyzed using the flotation method to detect oocysts, followed by microscopic identification based on oocyst morphology and size. The results indicated that the prevalence of Eimeria spp. infection was 100%. The oocysts were oval to round with double-layered walls, some of which were sporulated. Identified species included E. tenella, E. necatrix, E. maxima, E. acervulina, and E. praecox. Infected chickens’ feces were mucous, dark brown to reddish, indicating clinical signs of coccidiosis. The study indicates that Eimeria infection is endemic in the area and requires urgent attention through improved biosecurity, proper farm management, and farmer education. Further studies with molecular methods are recommended to identify species more accurately and develop evidence-based control strategies.
