Abstract

ABSTRACT The phenomenon of bullying that has shifted into the digital realm presents serious ethical challenges. Unlimited internet access allows the spread of hate speech and aggressive behavior without sufficient moral control. Various reports show that cyberbullying cases in Indonesia continue to rise, reflecting the weakening of digital empathy among social media users. This study aims to examine the role of digital empathy as a preventive strategy against unethical behavior in online spaces. The method used is a systematic review of scientific literature published between 2020 and 2025, with searches conducted through Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed, and ProQuest using the keywords “digital empathy,” “media ethics,” “cyberbullying,” “hate speech,” and “digital literacy.” The analysis results indicate that digital empathy significantly contributes to reducing online bullying behavior, fostering tolerance, and strengthening media ethics. Empathy-based digital literacy has also been proven to enhance social responsibility and reduce the spread of misinformation. This study recommends integrating empathy-based digital character education into curricula, establishing cross-sector collaboration for human-centered digital literacy programs, and fostering collective awareness to create a safe, ethical, and inclusive digital environment. ABSTRAK Fenomena perundungan yang kini bergeser ke ranah digital menimbulkan persoalan etis yang serius. Akses internet yang tak terbatas memungkinkan penyebaran ujaran kebencian dan perilaku agresif tanpa kontrol moral yang memadai. Berdasarkan berbagai laporan, angka cyberbullying di Indonesia terus meningkat, memperlihatkan lemahnya empati digital di kalangan pengguna media sosial. Penelitian ini bertujuan menelaah peran empati digital sebagai strategi preventif terhadap perilaku tidak etis di ruang maya. Metode yang digunakan adalah systematic review terhadap literatur ilmiah yang diterbitkan antara tahun 2020 hingga 2025, dengan penelusuran melalui Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed, dan ProQuest menggunakan kata kunci “empati digital,” “etika bermedia,” “cyberbullying,” “ujaran kebencian,” dan “literasi digital.” Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa empati digital berkontribusi signifikan dalam menekan perilaku perundungan daring, meningkatkan sikap toleran, dan memperkuat etika bermedia. Literasi digital berbasis empati juga terbukti mampu menumbuhkan tanggung jawab sosial dan mengurangi penyebaran disinformasi. Penelitian ini merekomendasikan integrasi pendidikan karakter digital berbasis empati dalam kurikulum, kolaborasi lintas sektor untuk program literasi digital yang humanis, serta pembentukan kesadaran kolektif guna menciptakan ruang digital yang aman, etis, dan inklusif.
