This study aims to describe the role of crossword media in vocabulary learning for sixth grade mildly mentally retarded children at SLB Rela Bhakti 1 Gamping in the 2025/2026 academic year. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. Data collection techniques included interviews, observation, and documentation. Two informants were used: the classroom teacher and the principal. Data validity was validated using source and technique triangulation. The results of the study indicate that crossword puzzles play a crucial role in vocabulary learning. They help students recognize new vocabulary through concrete visual cues. Furthermore, the activity of arranging letters in a grid provides students with the opportunity to gradually and systematically understand word structures. Crossword puzzles also align with the cognitive characteristics of students with mild intellectual disabilities, who require concrete and visual stimuli in their learning.
