Abstract

This community service program aims to improve the competence of Indonesian Junior High School Johor Bahru (SIJB) teachers in teaching intercultural-based English and character values. This program was motivated by the importance of intercultural communication skills (ICC) in foreign language learning, especially to face global challenges. The implementation of the program involved three main stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. In the preparation stage, coordination with the Consulate General and the school, interviews to identify needs, and FGDs to formulate learning solutions were conducted. The implementation stage includes onsite training consisting of theory and practice on intercultural strategies, techniques, and teaching materials, as well as team teaching practices between lecturers and teachers. Evaluation was conducted through monitoring the application of the learning model and documentation of activities. The results show an increase in teachers' understanding and skills in using intercultural learning models, as well as an increase in students' cultural awareness and communication skills. This program produced outputs in the form of publication articles, videos of learning practices, and intercultural teaching materials. Although the program was successful, improvements are needed in the duration of the training and the development of more varied learning methods. For sustainability, further training and dissemination of good practices to other schools are recommended. This program proved the effectiveness of the character value-based intercultural approach in improving the quality of education in overseas schools.
