Angon rasa is a Javanese cultural concept that is intrinsically linked to Surakarta-style Karawitan. This study aims to explore the concept of angon rasa within Javanese culture and analyze its manifestation in the musical practices of Surakarta-style Karawitan. The research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, utilizing a literature review, in-depth interviews with Karawitan experts, and direct field observations. The analysis is guided by Rahayu Supanggah’s concept of garap (musical work/interpretive musical processing) and Setiawan Edi Wibowo’s concept of rasa (feeling or aesthetic sensibility). The findings reveal that angon rasa is a Javanese cultural value manifested as an attitude of emotional management and sensitivity, which is then applied in Karawitan performances. Several musical expressions of angon rasa are identified, including the determination of laras (scale) and pathet (mode); the interplay between bawa (male vocal introduction) and andhegan (vocal pause) with thinthingan (gender cues); and the tabuhan (striking) of the gong as a musical accent. This study concludes that angon rasa functions as an essential aesthetic and communicative mechanism in Surakarta-style Karawitan, reflecting broader Javanese values applicable to daily life, such as ngerti ing semu tanggap ing sasmita (understanding subtle cues and responding appropriately), sambung rapet (tight interconnection), and gambuhing rasa (harmonization of feelings).
