ABSTRACT The community service activity regarding education on the hazards of the food additive benzoic acid and the demonstration of its independent detection among 30 women of the Family Welfare Movement (PKK) has been implemented effectively. This multimodal intervention successfully improved the literacy and skills of the participants, who were predominantly in the pre-elderly age cohort (43.3%) and act as pivotal gatekeepers of family health. Evaluation results indicated that the participants' practical skill success rate in detecting benzoic acid using a test kit reached 72.5%, which was higher than their theoretical understanding and attitude levels at 60%, with an overall mean evaluation score of 14.23 ± 1.55. These findings indicate that consumer empowerment through the mastery of concrete detection tools is more readily adopted than abstract informational campaigns alone. To expand its positive impact, it is recommended that the program be continued by strengthening comprehension of food safety limit regulations and empowering the PKK group as peer educators to foster a sustainable food safety ecosystem at the community level.
