Abstract

Venous wounds are a chronic problem that often occurs due to venous insufficiency and is characterized by excess exudate and slow healing. One of the modern approaches to chronic wound management is the use of calcium alginate as a primary dressing, which is able to absorb exudate, retain optimal moisture, and accelerate the granulation and epitheliation process. The purpose of the study was to determine the effectiveness of the application of calcium alginate as a primary dressing on the acceleration of granulation and epithelialization of venous wounds in the Independent Practice of Griya Afiat, Makassar City. This study is a case study in one patient with chronic venous injury. The treatment was carried out during two consecutive visits for three days using calcium alginate as the primary dressing with a combination of elastic compression dressings. Wound evaluation was performed using the Bates-Jensen Wound Assessment Tool. The results showed that after two treatments, there was a decrease in wound area from 35.91 cm² to 25.4 cm² (a change of 29.2%), a decrease in exudate from 35% to 15%, an increase in granulation tissue from 55% to 60%, and a decrease in epithelialization from 45% to 40% indicating an active proliferation phase. The application of calcium alginate as a primary dressing effectively accelerates the granulation process, reduces exudate, and significantly reduces the size of venous wounds. This dressing is recommended as the main choice for venous wounds with moderate to high exudate.
