<![CDATA[This study aims to identify and analyze the factors causing the increase in divorce petitions (cerai gugat) at Mahkamah Syar’iyah Sinabang, Simeulue Regency, Aceh Province, for the period 2023–2025. Cerai gugat divorce initiated by the wife has become the dominant phenomenon in Islamic religious courts across Indonesia, reflecting a significant shift in gender relations and women’s legal awareness. Simeulue’s unique geographical isolation as an archipelagic region adds a distinctive socio-economic dimension to this phenomenon. This study employs a juridical-empirical approach with a descriptive qualitative method. Data were obtained from official court records of Mahkamah Syar’iyah Sinabang and relevant legal documents. Total cases received fluctuated from 165 (2023) to 158 (2024), then surged to 190 (2025), with cerai gugat consistently comprising over 40% of all cases. The normative framework of cerai gugat in Islamic law (khulʽ) and Indonesian positive law (PP No. 9/1975 and KHI) forms the legal basis of analysis. The results identify five officially recorded factors: (1) incessant conflict (syiqāq), dominating 81.4% (2023), 84.3% (2024), and 88.8% (2025) of cases; (2) abandonment, showing a declining trend; (3) imprisonment; (4) apostasy; and (5) economic factors.]]>
