Abstract

The Internet is influencing communication between parents and children within the family. This paper demonstrates how the Internet affects parent-child communication in Hanoi, Vietnam's capital. The study employed a sociological survey method with 113 parent-child pairs. Research participants are children randomly selected from middle and high schools, along with their parents, with informed consent. The selected 113 parent-child pairs belong to two- and three-generation families, with the mandatory condition that the family has used the Internet in recent years. Research results show that both parents and children widely use the Internet. However, there is no correlation between the duration of Internet use and the time spent on direct communication between parents and children. It is worth noting a low positive correlation (P = 0.239; Sig = 0.011) between children’s Internet use for communication and their use of the social network Zalo to communicate with parents. There is also a low positive correlation (P=0.217; Sig=0.021) between parents’ Internet use for communication and their ability to share in and understand children's communication. This result offers a new perspective on the influence of Internet use on communication between parents and children in today's urban families in a low- to middle-income country like Vietnam. Influenced by the specific features of Vietnamese culture and the conditions of the COVID-19 lockdown, children exhibit substantially higher levels of internet use than their parents, and this usage does not appear to diminish the frequency of face-to-face communication within families, as indicated by correlation analyses. These findings underscore the importance of examining internet-use behaviors within their socio-cultural context and highlight the need for broader, methodologically diversified research in this field
