Abstract

Ancient gravestones are archaeological remains from the Islamic period that are widely distributed across the Nusantara archipelago. However, research on these objects in Central Indonesia, particularly on Lombok Island, remains limited and tends to be descriptive. Consequently, the unique ornamental variety representing the acculturation of local Sasak elements with megalithic, Hindu-Buddha, and Islamic traditions has not been extensively revealed. This paper aims to provide a preliminary review of the morphological typology and decorative motifs of ornamented ancient gravestone on Lombok Island. Utilizing literature studies and field surveys across 12 sites, this research identifies four main typologies: the Lombok-Tralaya Type, the Lombok-Bugis Type, the Lombok Type, and the Aceh Type. The analysis indicates that the Lombok-Tralaya and Lombok-Bugis types served as the precursors to the emergence of the Lombok Type, reflecting the process of cultural adaptation and the creativity of the Sasak people.
