Abstract

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive condition that frequently requires long-term hemodialysis, placing significant demands on patients’ physical health, psychological state, and social functioning. Family support has been identified as a meaningful factor in patients’ adaptation to chronic illness and in maintaining treatment adherence. Objectives: This study examined the association between family support and quality of life among patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: A cross-sectional correlational study was conducted with 52 hemodialysis patients at RAA Soewondo Regional General Hospital in Pati, Indonesia, selected through total sampling. Family support was measured with the 20-item Family Support Questionnaire; quality of life was assessed with the EORTC QLQ-C30. Data were analysed using the Chi-square test at a significance level of 0.05.Results: Half of the respondents reported high family support (50.0%), and 38.5% reported good quality of life. A significant association was found between family support and quality of life (p < 0.001), with stronger family support consistently associated with better quality-of-life outcomes. Conclusion: Family support is significantly associated with quality of life in hemodialysis patients. These findings suggest that family-centred nursing interventions should be integrated into routine hemodialysis care, with particular attention to patients whose family support is limited or inconsistent.
