Abstract

This study analyzes the opportunities and challenges in the international trade of Indonesian rattan decorative handicrafts, focusing on the Japanese market during the 2025–2026 period. Employing a qualitative descriptive analysis method based on real data from the Satu Data Perdagangan (Trade Data One) portal, the research finds that exports of woven handicrafts (HS Code 46) to Japan have demonstrated resilience, showing a positive growth trend of 4.67% amidst global economic dynamics. Japan remains a strategic partner utilizing the IJEPA preferential tariff scheme, with primary shipments routed through the Tanjung Priok and Tanjung Perak ports. Recent data indicates that West Java and Bali remain the leading supply regions, while South Kalimantan has emerged as a province with significant growth, recording a 16.38% increase. Despite the vast opportunities, Indonesian exporters face highly complex technical challenges in 2025–2026, particularly regarding Japan's "Zero Defect" quality standards and compliance with sustainability regulations. The study recommends fostering synergy between the government and artisans to pursue design diversification and strengthen product certification in order to maintain Indonesia's market dominance in the Japanese rattan sector.
