Abstract

Islamization in Ternate has often been discussed as a historical process of religious expansion, trade, and sultanate politics, but it has rarely been examined as a communication process. This study aims to analyze the Islamization of Ternate from the perspectives of da’wah communication and intercultural communication. This research uses a qualitative descriptive design with a literature study method. The data were collected from academic books, journal articles, historical documents, and previous studies relevant to Islamization, da’wah communication, intercultural communication, and Ternate society. The findings show that Islamization in Ternate developed gradually through spice trade networks, social interaction, religious education, and the political authority of the sultanate. Sultan Zainal Abidin and Sultan Babullah strengthened Islamic values through governance, while Muslim scholars such as Datu Maulana Husein delivered Islamic messages through persuasive and culturally adaptive da’wah. This study concludes that Islamization in Ternate succeeded because Islamic messages were communicated through dialogical, adaptive, and culturally accommodative approaches. The findings imply that da’wah communication becomes more effective when it respects local culture, builds social trust, and uses communication strategies that fit the cultural context of society.
