Living Qur’an studies examine the Qur’an not merely as a normative text but as a living reality that interacts dynamically with social practices, cultural expressions, and religious traditions within Muslim communities. Although Living Qur’an scholarship in Indonesia has increasingly explored various local traditions, studies on Qur’anic reception in Wayang Osing performances in Banyuwangi remain limited. This study aims to analyze the forms and typologies of Qur’anic reception in Wayang Osing performances presented by Ki Ilham Laili Mursidi and to examine their significance within the religious and cultural life of the Osing community. Employing a qualitative method within the Living Qur’an framework, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and subsequently analyzed using thematic analysis grounded in Qur’anic reception theory. The findings reveal three major typologies of Qur’anic reception. Exegetical reception is reflected in the interpretation of Qur’anic messages through narrative structures, symbolic representations, and philosophical explanations articulated by the dalang, constituting a form of culturally embedded exegesis. Aesthetic reception appears in the recitation of Qur’anic verses, żikr, ṣalawāt, and syi’ir in the Osing language accompanied by traditional gamelan music. Functional reception is manifested in the use of Qur’anic verses within rituals of protection, spiritual healing, and ruwatan. These findings demonstrate that Wayang Osing functions as a dynamic medium through which Qur’anic meanings are localized, negotiated, and transmitted within a specific cultural setting. The study contributes to Living Qur’an scholarship by highlighting the interplay between sacred text, local culture, and communal religious practice in contemporary Indonesian Islam.
