Architecture is a reflection of cultural context of the milieu from which it originates. As such, comparisons among diverse spatio-formal characteristics of certain architectural works may be regarded as comparisons among diverse cultural backgrounds of those works. This paper presents a morphological comparison among two architectural works from two diverse cultures, Topkapı Palace and Tamansari Palace, through the quantitative approach using fractal dimension analysis to measure the visual complexities of the floor plans. The result shows that the visual complexities of both the palaces are considerably similar. The high visual complexities of both may be interpreted through several aspects such as function, history, and philosophy. In conclusion, this paper presents a case wherein the mathematical study using fractal dimension analysis, complemented by the more comprehensive interpretive inquiries, demonstrates the potential of an alternative methodology for research in architecture.
