Optimizing water resource management is crucial for improving the efficiency of hydroelectric power plants (HEPP), especially at the Ampelgading HEPP, which is one of the electricity suppliers in Malang Regency. One of the problems in HEPP operations is sedimentation in the cooling water system, which can cause disruptions to the generating units and increase maintenance costs. To improve the operational performance of the Ampelgading HEPP and reduce sedimentation in the tailrace, this study focused on the application of a special sand pump. The results showed that the drainage method using a sand pump was more effective than the manual method, as sedimentation drainage could be carried out without stopping the generating units. By reducing sedimentation levels, increasing pressure in the cooling system, and lowering bearing temperatures, the application of this tool demonstrated improved efficiency. This is demonstrated by an increase in electricity production. In November, production increased from 28.97 GWh to 31.64 GWh, in December from 33.88 GWh to 34.08 GWh, and in January from 37.63 GWh to 38.89 GWh. Therefore, maximizing sedimentation drainage through sand pumps helps maintain the sustainability of the Ampelgading hydroelectric power plant's operations.
