Abstract

Anxiety commonly increases during the third trimester as pregnant women approach childbirth and may affect maternal comfort, sleep, physiological stress responses, and readiness for labor. Hypnobirthing combines controlled breathing, deep relaxation, visualization, and positive suggestion to promote a calmer perception of childbirth. This literature review synthesized evidence on the effect of hypnobirthing on anxiety among third-trimester pregnant women. Google Scholar was used as the principal source of primary studies, while Google Books supported theoretical background and citation tracing. Articles published from 2021 to 2026 were screened using population, intervention, comparison, outcome, and study-design criteria. Five studies involving 140 pregnant women were included. Four studies used experimental or quasi-experimental pretest-posttest designs, whereas one analytical study examined the association between hypnobirthing practice and anxiety. All studies reported lower anxiety or a significant relationship between hypnobirthing and anxiety, with reported p values below 0.05. The strongest evidence came from controlled studies that demonstrated greater anxiety reduction in intervention groups than in control groups. Nevertheless, differences in intervention frequency, measurement instruments, participant parity, and research design limit direct comparison. Hypnobirthing may be considered a supportive non-pharmacological intervention in maternity nursing, but larger randomized studies using standardized protocols are required.
