Abstract

Dysmenorrhea is a common menstrual complaint among adolescent girls and may disrupt daily activities, school participation, and quality of life. This literature review synthesized evidence on the effect of lavender aromatherapy on dysmenorrhea pain and compared the methodological characteristics of the available studies. Google Scholar was searched for Indonesian- and English-language full-text publications from January 2021 to July 2026. Studies were selected using population, intervention, comparison, outcome, and study-design criteria. Of 561 records identified, five quantitative experimental studies were included. All five reported statistically significant reductions in dysmenorrhea pain after lavender aromatherapy, with reported p values below 0.001. The interventions used inhaled lavender oil or aromatherapy candles for 10-30 minutes over one to three days, and pain was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale or Visual Analog Scale. The strongest evidence came from a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial, whereas the remaining studies mainly used one-group pretest-posttest designs. Lavender aromatherapy appears promising as a complementary non-pharmacological intervention for adolescent dysmenorrhea. Nevertheless, evidence certainty remains limited by heterogeneous protocols, small samples, incomplete adverse-event reporting, and the predominance of uncontrolled studies.
